Alex Gopher's debut is full of late-night house music in the images of smoochy jazz, Prince-styled funk and the romantic airs of 1990s revisionist disco. The most immediate tracks are party-pleasers with butt-oriented beats and strident vocals demanding that you get down and get with it. Elsewhere Gopher is more considered--even melancholy--sampling Billie Holliday on "The Child" or collaborating with Air for the intimate alt. ballad "Ralph and Katy" (a swooning track with poetic vocoderisms and fragile airs). Much of the album shows Gopher's credentials as doyen of the French house movement--like Bob Sinclair or Air (both of whom debuted on the Solid imprint co-founded by Gopher), he makes a version of house/electronica that is metropolitan and urbane. He also holds a warm nostalgia for the lost world of Studio 54 and remakes disco as a luxurious modern music--a winning approach. --Tony Marcus

YOU MY BABY & I is a funk album in the vein of Daft Punk and Air--in other words, it incorporates equal parts ambient, dance, and electronic, and then slathers the result in samples and some phat bass sounds. The tracks feature cool, unexpected hooks snapping around a pretty wicked rhythm section--especially on "With U". Given what follows it, the album opens somewhat oddly, with the first track, "Time", suggesting a kind of Lenny Kravitz funk-rock but without the Hendrix riffs and flourishes. The album's best track is "The Child", afairly impressive attempt to move Billie Holiday into '90s-style ambient funk, via a groovy, shimmering beat and a hugesample of her classic standard "God Bless the Child".
Gopher uses samples in a similar manner on several other tracks--the slow grooving "You My Baby & I" is structured around a Herbie Hancock sample and the amped dance vibe of "Party People" features a sample of Eruption's disco hit "Up & Away". Other standouts include the cleverly layered "Consolidated", which features a snaky bass line and some subtle echo andthe luxuriously slow and smooth "Quiet Storm", reminiscent of trip-hopping Barry White.
