Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Released as a glass-raising toast to the longstanding loyalty of his Irish fanbase (whose thirst for fresh David Gray material is truly quenchless), Lost Songs 95-98 assembles material written during a label-hopping lapse either side of the Sell Sell Sell album and which was belatedly committed to tape in October of 1999. Far from being a tatty what-I-did-in-my-spare-time scrapbook of runtish discards and B-side quality cast-offs, Lost Songs offers conclusive proof that even David Gray's folk-pop wastepaper basket is lined with silver. Effortlessly maintaining Gray's brand-image as a troubadour-with-a-troubled-oulook, via a homogeneous selection of achy and predominantly acoustic heart-on-sleeve urban spirituals, many of Lost Songs' choicest moments ("Flame Turns Blue", "As I'm Leaving", "Falling Down The Mountainside") could all be Dylan-esque rungs from White Ladder.--Kevin Maidment

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll be glad you found them!, 12 May 2003
By Ms. C. J. Malcolmson "rinibop" (Cheltenham) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Lost Songs 95-98 (Audio CD)
I discovered 'Lost Songs' quite a while after 'White Ladder'. Having played the latter CD to absolute death, I wanted to move onto something else. I was initially quite wary, having convinced myself that nothing could beat the outstanding 'White Ladder' but I was fortunately proved wrong. I bought 'Lost Songs' to accompany me on a particularly long train journey, knowing that I would be forced to either listen to the CD or the inane chatter of my travelling companions. As it happens, I played the CD roughly 4 times over because it was simply so good.

Having said that I loved 'White Ladder' there were a few songs that didn't quite do it for me, namely 'My Oh My', 'Were Not Right' and the title track 'White Ladder'. I personally preferred the gentler side of the album. The absolutely astounding 'This Years Love', 'Babylon' and 'Sail Away'. If those were the songs you liked on 'White Ladder' you will not be disappointed.

'Lost Songs' starts with my joint favourite 'Flame turns Blue' and doesn't let up till (other favourite) 'Clean Pair of eyes'.
The songs are mellow and gentle and flowing, some more stirring (particularly 'Falling down the mountainside') but all in all, I would say there are no dud's, no songs to hastily skip. It has a more accoustic and raw feeling than any of his previous or future efforts, and so may not be to everyone's liking.

It's definitely a chilling album, one to put on after a hard day at work, or whilst lying in a warm bath - pure bliss!
My only complaint would be the two instrumental songs, such as shame to waste valuable CD space without hearing the delightful Mr Gray's voice.

Top marks, 10/10!

5.0 out of 5 stars They're not just trying to cash in on WL, it's a real gem, 26 Aug 2001

With most other artists who show real promise, record companies try to cash in after early successes and release all the crap stuff, taking advantage of a growing fan base. After buying the brilliant White Ladder, before sampling the less notable album Sell Sell Sell, it was with a certain amount of trepidation that I bought Lost Songs. I needn't have worried. For me, Daid Gray has achieved the magic goal of creating an album which in total is greater than the sum of its' parts. It really is brilliant, so honest, in displaying his formidable talent. Forget the multiplayer or disc-changer, it loses a big chunk if you don't listen to the album in it's entirety. Take off your shoes, turn out the lights, turn on the stereo and take part in a real celebration of this guys talent. Lost Songs is a beautiful lullaby. David Gray for me is unashamedly a revelation in these days of contrived tunes and groups of toned bodies coming at you 24:7. His guitar cries, his piano softens, his music speaks. I think Gray has achieved something that he hasn't even set out to do. It is a real masterpiece I kid you not. (This album even outshines the outstanding Parachutes by Coldplay, and if you like that, you'll know exactly what I mean.) An album for kindred spirits. This album is one of the only honest things I've heard from anybody all year.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly outstanding collection of tracks, second to NONE!, 17 Mar 2001

From the first minute that my ears had the privelage of hearing this truly talented artist, I was hooked.I thought White Ladder was good but this really does take the biscuit.Words can not describe the haunting beauty of some of these tracks.People never seem to take the time to actually listen to the lyrical content of a song, well if ever there was an album to encourage that, then here it is. A simply superb album.More of the same please Mr.Gray...........
