Product Description

CD Description
The final Doors album to feature vocalist Jim Morrison reaffirmed the quartet's grasp of blues-rock. Beset by personal and professional problems, they retreated to a rehearsal room, cast pressures aside, and recorded a handful of their most memorable compositions. The overall sound of the record isrelatively stripped down, but the musicianship is uniformlyexcellent, with empathetic interplay between guitarist Robbie Krieger and keyboard player Ray Manzarek. Jim Morrison's voice, though somewhat ragged and weather-worn, adds its fiercely unmistakable resonance.
The spooky, low-key "Cars Hiss By My Window" and an edgy cover of John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake" are straight, no-nonsense blues, but the album's highlights, including the jangling radio hit "Love Her Madly" and the breezy, chugging title track, which rides on a thrumming bass line and Krieger's fluid licks, mix bluesy bluster with the Doors' swirling, poetic magic. Morrison's death within weeks of the album's completion cast a pall over its content, especially the eerie rain and the funereal electric piano of "Riders On The Storm", the album's indisputable standout, and one of the most compelling, evocative songs in the band's catalogue. Though not the Doors' finest record, L.A. WOMAN was a fitting swan song for one of the mostunique and important bands of the '60s.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remastered, 18 Oct 2006
By N. J. Taylor "Nick" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've had this album for years and always loved it. Recently, though, I got the remasterd version. What an improvement! I had no idea what I was missing. There's all sorts of stuff going on in the background that I couldn't hear before. But it's not just that; there are resonances and tonal qualities to Jim's voice of which I was previously utterly ignorant. This is what the CD was invented for: enabling us to hear the music how it was mean to be heard. If you haven't done so already, get the remastered version of LA Woman, and let the music live again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for the LA Woman....for everyone!, 17 Jul 2004
Arguably The Doors best album? Arguably genius? Definitely one of the best albums ever.

Although it's hard to take your ears off the voice of Jim Morrison, it's also hard to ignore the magnificent guitar playing of Robbie Krieger. His playing is brilliant, notably 'LA Woman' and 'Been Down So Long'. There aren't any lengthy solos or intricate leads. Just well-placed fills and beautiful guitar harmonies. He also uses wah effects on upbeat opener 'The Changeling'. Some very nice guitar playing!

As well as being the kind of songs you can imagine driving along to in a nice convertable sports car, you also find yourself singing along to them. And it's hard not to! Even if you can stop yourself singing these songs, I can guarantee your toes won't stop tapping! This album is infectious.

LA Woman is The Doors at their best, and undoubtedly at the pinnacle of their creative and musical powers. Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Doors last album ... and their best., 13 Jul 2001
By A Customer
The Doors recorded two albums afte Jim's death but this was the last 'real' Doors album. This album is has a very bluesy feel to it (I suspect the direction Morrison felt most comfortable with at the time) and is characterised with quite a weary attitude throught - most exemplified in Cars Hiss by My Window and Hyacinth House. It is also absolutely superb. The playing is understated and perfectly attuned to the lyrics and mood of the piece throughout. Morrison's voice is in fine form but you can sense the 'end' throughout this album. Highest reccomendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost as good as the eponynous album.
It could have been expected that any work that they released after their self titled album would have been overshadowed by it. This is unfortunate for 'L.A. Read more
