4.0 out of 5 stars A Bridge Worth Travelling, 6 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Have your ever seen a local band and wondered why they have never released a CD? As this collection of fourteen tracks demonstrates, it's not always for lack of quality material or talent. In this case, judging from the extensive liner notes provided on the CD, it was due to internal conflicts and the lack of good will on the part of their original record company. Fortunately for us, we can finally experience Bridge through the tracks that were used to get their record deal in the first place. Listening to this CD, it's not surprising to learn of their past association with Norman Connors, who produced an earlier incarnation of the group called Vitamin "E" (which had a moderate R&B hit in 1977 with "Sharing"). Although Connors wasn't directly involved in this collection, his special brand of sophisticated soul clearly influenced this group. Most of the songs in this collection feature the vocals of Debravon Lewis. Her singing seems to draw upon several influences from jazz to funk. Imagine the sweetness of Jody Watley, but with greater range and power. She is in top form on "From the Darkness to the Light," "Turn to Love" and the title cut. Lewis co-wrote the track, "Sweet & Wonderful," which was later recorded by longtime Connors collaborator, Jean Carne. Norman Connors also covered the track, "Listen," which closes the set. It features the fine lead vocals of Freddie Hughes, (who also worked on the Vitamin "E" album). R&B fans might remember him from his Top 20 R&B hit of 1968, "Bring My Baby Back." Keeping it in the family, Freddie's son Derick (only 18 at the time these tracks were recorded) is featured on seven tracks. His vocals sound like a cross between Donny Hathaway and Jeffrey Osborne with touches of Will Downing. Check him out on "Out There in Space." Derick's duets with Lewis are particularly strong. They seem perfected matched on "Sweet & Wonderful." Lewis later recorded two albums for Motown under the name Fizzy Qwick -- first
