Tyneside folk-singer Bob Fox has chosen a diverse selection of Irish, Scottish and North-Eastern English songs to cover on his album Dreams Never Leave You, but he approaches all the instrumentals, folk ballads and cover versions here with the same relaxed ease. Whether singing Silly Wizard's "The Rambling Rover" or Jimmy Nail's "Big River", his rich, reverberating voice is an ideal vehicle for the material. Here he is helped considerably by members of Fairport Convention, who generously function as his unofficial backing band (they also provided the studio facilities and released the album on their own Woodworm label). Indeed, the Fairporters transform this album from simply being a pleasant collection of songs into a folk-rock delight, supporting the singer's warm and inviting manner with their own fluid instrumental prowess. On "From Me to You", for example, Chris Leslie's fluent mandolin gives a whole new edge to this Lennon-McCartney standard, while the electric fiddle of Ric Sanders helps make "Greek Lightning" a standout track. Their contribution makes this a feel-good folk album that will appeal both to fans of contemporary singing and folk-rockers alike. --Mark Walker
