Product Description

Mike Mendez directs this low-budget homage to 1980s horror yarns. 40 years after the nuns of the school chapel were torched by ex-student Christine (Oakley Stevenson), a group of college kids decide to visit the ruins in the night as part of a homecoming dare. However, the game soon backfires on them as they come face-to-face with demons, death and the adult Christine (Adrienne Barbeau), who has now quite succeeded in putting her past behind her...

From Amazon.co.uk

With tongue firmly in cheek throughout, The Convent piles on the gross-out gore. A group of college kids take a midnight trip to a deserted convent school which 40 years earlier was the scene of a massacre by a wayward convent schoolgirl called Christine. What they don't know is that the long dead and mightily peeved souls of the murdered nuns are still stalking the premises. The demonic nuns liquidate a succession of dumb and dumber teens in order to steal their souls. Among the potential victims are a virgin Goth, a jive-talkin' jock and a pair of effeminate, flouncing Satanists. Coolio cameos as a likeably corrupt cop whose bark is worse than his bite. The humour fluctuates between goofy and just plain stupid. But director Mike Mendez thankfully bypasses the Scream blueprint for slasher flicks. The Convent provides strictly irony-free screams, harking back instead to classics like Halloween and Nightmare On Elm Street. Horror veteran Adrienne Barbeau shows up as the adult Christine, strapped with an arsenal that would make even Charlton Heston blush and ready to wreak revenge on her convent school education all over again.

On The DVD: The DVD features static menus and extras are limited to a theatrical trailer and cast and crew filmographies. The main feature is presented as a clear transfer in 4:3 full frame format with Dolby Digital 2.0 sound. --Chris Campion

I'm a great fan of horror films that don't take themselves seriously. This is one of the funniest Z movies i've ever seen, from the opening scene to the final credits, I pretty much laughed all the way through. It's the perfect film for having a few friends round, with some beers late at night.yes, the actings not great, yes the plot's fairly unbelieavable (but so are a of horror films), yes the special effects are negliable, but the script is hilarious. All the horror cliches are in force, demonic nuns, posessions, group of teenagers, virgins and statanists - it's an absolute joy.
Don't take it too seriously and you'll probably love it.

At the beginning we see a woman burst into the convent and massacre the nuns and priest. Years later a group of college students break into the boarded up convent only for evil forces to kill them one by one.
Not much of a plot, and the acting on the whole is terrible, but this is really good fun, high on cheese and gore with no intentions above entertaining its audience. Theres a group of ineffectual devil worshippers, whose leader has taken a masterclass in the Mike Raven school of acting, and the undead students/nuns look great. The film belongs to avenging 'angel' Christine(played by Horror stalwart Adrienne Barbeau) who seriously kicks some beelzebub butt, and theres a hilarious ending.
Just dont come to this film with any lofty expectations, and just enjoy it for what it is, a camp low budget B-Horror with its tongue firmly in its cheek, and you'll find plenty to enjoy. 3 out of 5

Who are these people who describe this trash as a 'masterpiece'? Without exaggeration 'The Convent' is the most shallow, muddling and poorly devised film I've seen in many years. To show there desperation the makers of this Evil Dead rip off sell you the fact that Coolio stars in it. WOW!!! But if you are a genuine fan you'll still be dissapointed as our dreadlocked friend appears in just one scene.
Directors can usually get away with flimsy storylines if they provide the horror fan with some juicy gore. Not here. The SFX could have been achieved by a child's make up set and there is also their frustrating obsession of making the zombies appear epileptic (watch it and you'll see what I mean!). To be frank you'll see scarier stuff at a circus. It isn't very often that you can't wait for a film to end but to my suprise this movie only lasts for 78 minutes which meant that it's finality soon came to my mercy. If they had made even a moderate attempt to establish a backstory or character relationships they could have padded it out, but in fairness this unfunny spoof was destined to fail from it's feeble outset. This isn't the sought of film you watch and think- rubbish, oh well. It's the rare film that actually angers you due to the sheer stupidity of it's characters, souperficiality of it's story and the overall dire effort that has gone into thrusting it upon the poor viewing public.

... but thankfully not very often.

If it hadn't been for the stylish opening sequence where a teenage schoolgirl, cigarette clenched between her teeth, bludgeons, blasts, and burns a convent full of nuns, and the amusing later scene when Adrienne Barbeau (still sleazily sexy in her fifties) roars through the same convent on a motorbike decapitating demon nuns as she goes (yes, it's the same character), I would have only given this one star. The rest in between is total crap.

The characters are irritating beyond belief: a bunch of jocks who deserved worse than being turned into demons with poor makeup; the most feeble bunch of satanists you can imagine, two women with big boobs, an effete gay so camp he's insulting to camp gays, and a squeaky voiced leader -okay, they are played for laughs, pity they weren't funny.

The only remotely interesting character is the first to be turned into a demon nun thus making her stop being interesting leaving no-one at all of the cast you wish wouldn't die.

Feeble makeup and gore effects. Stupid and pointless strobe lighting effects which make the demons look as if they're having a fit.

A twist end that is so obvious the moment the movie continues after the demons are dead.

Reviews of this dvd encouraged me to buy it. Please, don't make my mistake. This is a horror-comedy which fails completely at both.

Let me begin by saying that this movie is incredibly hilarious. Hilarious, in my world, means lots of blood and lots of sacrilege. The nuns crack me up constantly...Some things about this is rather B-Quality so don't expect any majorly expensive effects. The pace is fast and keeps you interested and Adrienne Babrbeau--she always rocks.
The opening scene alone is worth it -- probably one of the best scenes I've ever seen.
Oh yeah, buy this version -- don't buy the American/Canadian version, they cut out 11minutes!

If cheesy mid night horor flicks are your thing then get this! It`s a rollercoaster of laughs, gore, horror, sex, drugs and satanism! The opening scene is amazing if not a bit shocking and the pace is high throughout the film so it never gets dull. Get a few friends over and scream!
