Synopsis

In a sleepy village in Hampshire, called Farnborough, on the 16th October, 1908, Colonel Samuel Franklin Cody climbed into British Army Aeroplane No. 1 and after a take-off run of around sixty feet flew a distance of over a thousand feet at a height above the ground of about thirty feet. From this event grew the research and development centre for all aspects of aviation and, today, it is impossible to look at any modern aircraft without much of the research on the plane having taken place at Farnborough.
