Ibert, a master of instrumental colour, has five of his most popular pieces on this CD.Bacchanale opens the programme with unbridled joie de vivre, a carnival clown of a scherzo running riot with a bucket of custard and a happy grin. The romp continues through Divertissement, which might be described as light music, except it really is too boisterously disrespectful for such an appellation, periodic blasts of a policeman's whistle and splashes of wedding march adding to the hurly-burly. Ouverture de Fete is a more imperious, yet heroically cheerful celebration. Ibert's flair for drama, melody and orchestration made him an ideal film composer, and the single movement Symphony Marine has its origins in the score for SOS Foch. This is sea adventure music, and if it sounds a clichéd today, at the dawn of the recorded film score Ibert was opening whole new horizons. The hugely successful Escales, portraits of Rome-Palerme, Tunis-Nefta and Valencia, positively glows with Mediterranean colour and sultry, heady atmosphere. For over a century the Orchestre de Concerts Lamoureux has premiered major French composers, and they respond to conductor Yutaka Sado with immensely complex textures in brilliant, evocative flashes of Technicolor.
