Amazon.co.uk Review

Electronic Arts' Alien Crossfire--created by legendary designer Sid Meier, maker of such landmark games as Civilization and Pirates!--is the official add-on pack for a brilliant turn-based strategy game, Alpha Centauri.

The pack expands on the original game by adding seven factions, new facilities, additional secret projects and new branches to the elaborate technology tree. Fans also receive many new enhancements to Alpha Centauri, including play-by-e-mail mutiplayer mode, hotseat multiplayer mode, and numerous tweaks to the interface and unit properties. Alien Crossfire's new factions include cyborgs, drones, pirates and two sets of alien societies. Factions are balanced by a set of predetermined statistics and characteristics, such as bonuses for particular government and production styles.

Gameplay means creating and maintaining a flourishing society on a hostile alien world. Players must juggle dozens of civilisation settings--such as government style, unit production and pollution prevention--and discover the best means of conquering enemies through a powerful economy, research and development, or military conquest. Alternatively, players and computer-controlled factions can become allies instead of enemies and trade technologies and unit designs to further bolster scientific advancements and economy.

With an exciting new story line, dozens of enhancements, and tried-and-true gameplay that adds hours of life to the original game, Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire is a must-have expansion pack for Alpha Centauri fans. But remember that you will need Alpha Centauri in order to play and enjoy Alien Crossfire. --Doug Radcliffe

Will the humans band together to overcome the alien threat? Or will diplomacy prove more effective in dealing with the invaders?

5.0 out of 5 stars A constuctive addition, 13 Nov 2000
By A Customer
An excellent addition to the original game providing new features to an already rich game. The seven new races have a slight tendency to overpower the original races, with both the alien factions and the pirates having a tendency to leave everyone else behind. In the case of the aliens this is forgiveable as the diplomacy AI for these factions largely prevents human factions from making strong alliances with them. The new unit abilities and base facilities are good additions, but the new secret projects and indigenous life-forms are just fantastic. Firaxis have come up with very nice ideas for their factions and technologies, continuing to remind people that both technology and society have to move forward in a coordinated fashion. Perhaps the most severe criticism of the game is that at the latter stages of a game there is a tendency for the game to be exceedingly cumbersome as you're dealing with such a huge empire. Additionally, if you wish to automate units such as formers (terraforming units) which are the most boring units to operate manually, then the AI fails to take into account factors such as secret projects. For example; with the new secret project "the Manifold Harmonics" and a high Planet rating the most productive enchancement in a square is generally the native xenofungus. Even so, an automated former will rip up your fungus fields to plant/construct inefficient and obsolete farms, mines and so forth. Despite these moans I should repeat that the game is much, much better than its predecessors and competitors; it can be as challenging as you want it to be with the choice of fourteen factions to play with/against, six difficulty levels and a selection of rules that can be changed. In addition there is now a proper Faction editor giving you a chance to engineer the faction that best represents you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Adding polish to the original, 28 Aug 2001
Alien Crossfire is really a glorified patch for the superb original, Alpha Centauri. However, this is not a criticism as the various tweaks and subtle enhancements, new technologies and base facilities simply adds polish to what is arguably one of the best examples of turn-based strategy gaming. The new factions can be played mixed with the original seven, providing some interesting scenarios, further enhanced by the faction editor. There are still some flaws - notably automated terraforming / secret project ratings which should have been ironed out by an add-on such as this, however these are minor discrepancies which are far out-weighed by the overall gameplay embellishments. Alien Crossfire is recommended for keen fans of the original looking to expand their empire building skills - and loosing yet more sleep!
