Who would have thought that online games could be such fun? Taking the highly successful
Ultima series of RPG games as its base, EA have built on the popularity of
Ultima Online: Renaissance to create a thoroughly absorbing and ingenious multiplayer game.
The game is cleverly built so that you can roam around as a complete novice without fear of being destroyed by more experienced characters, while a well-structured tutorial guides you through your first steps. As you become more confident, you can enter the complex system of guilds and training, allowing you to develop the skills of your chosen hero. The ability to have up to five characters in any one world gives you the chance to explore, spell cast and battle to your heart's content.
Remarkably smooth even on a standard modem, and with dozens of quests, monsters and other players to team up with (or against), Ultima Online: The Second Age is probably the most dangerously addictive game of the year.--Andrew Losowsky
Amazon.co.uk Review
For hard-core role players, Ultima Online: The Second Age offers the perfect fantasy milieu--a massive online world and a pool of dedicated playmates.
After working through a fairly extensive installation and account setup, you get to create a character, choosing the statistics, profession, and even the look of the avatar. This character is then sent to Britannia. As an apprentice in your chosen field, you are free to seek experience, mentors, adventure, and treasure.
There are many monsters and obstacles to player survival. Thriving in the Ultima Online universe requires quick wits, resourcefulness, and more than a little luck. The game is complex, with loads to learn (requiring a very up-to-date computer and a fast Internet connection).
This may sound like more trouble than it's worth, but the world of Britannia is very much enriched by its online existence. With most other characters run by other Internet users, Ultima Online has spontaneity and flexibility non-existent in traditional computer games. Instead of being herded through a fixed plot, you build your character's fortunes from the ground up. The result is a story without end in a world players can visit as often as they like. --Alyx Dellamonica, Amazon.com
