Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
Opposing Force returns the player to the Black Mesa facility, but tells the tale from the perspective of Colonel Adrian Shephard, one of the soldiers, sent to clean up the scientists and their reality-altering mess. Just as in Half-Life, things quickly go badly for Colonel Shephard and his men. Ambushed by aliens, Adrian must fight his way through the ruins of the facility in an attempt to reach a helicopter extraction point.

What makes Opposing Force shine is the way it expands on the story of Half-Life. Colonel Shephard passes though areas that players of Half-Life are sure to recognise, and he occasionally runs into characters from the original game, including the infuriating Man in Suit. Opposing Force also introduces several new weapons, such as a sniper rifle (with scope), heavy machine gun and a .357 Magnum with a laser sight. There's even a "weapon" that is actually a common alien creature from the first game; its unique features allow it to be used as a kind of grappling hook.

Several new aliens make an appearance as well, almost all of them deadly. They exhibit the same sophisticated AI (artificial intelligence) as the monsters in Half-Life, relentlessly and intelligently attacking Adrian as he makes his way through the game's impressive levels. Fortunately, Colonel Shephard's rank allows him to take command of any soldiers he encounters. Riflemen and machine gunners can be ordered to follow Adrian and provide covering fire, or assigned to guard a door or room. Engineers can cut through locked or blocked doorways, while Medics can heal the injured. Unlike Half-Life's solitary "me against the world" gameplay, the addition of competent friendly forces provides a feeling of camaraderie: there's nothing like leading a squad of loyal Marines against an alien horde. --Mike Fehlauer

5.0 out of 5 stars A new way of looking at expansion packs, 7 Jul 2000
By A Customer
When Half-Life came out in 1998, it raised the bar on what people expected out of your standard first person shooter. Opposing Force does the same for expansion packs. In Half-Life, you took the role of Gordon Freeman, a scientist at Black Mesa Research Facility that's had opened itself up to an alien invasion. Stuck between aliens and troops deployed to clean up the mess, you struggle to survive and escape. In Opposing Force you play the role of Corporal Adrian Shephard, sent in to sanitize the facility. You move through a familiar environment, but with new twists and challenges, as well as a variety of weapons, both military and alien. It's just the thing for people who can't get enough Half-Life.

4.0 out of 5 stars the second game of the series, 15 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Half-life oposing force is the follow up to one of the best games I have ever played which is Half-life.
In half-life you are Gordon Freeman trying to escape from the Black Mesa facility, while Marines are tracking you down and trying to kill you. in opposing force you're one of them. In opposing force there are lots of new things. You get to talk to the other marines like medics who will heal you or engineers who will weld down locked doors. You also have the new ability to swing and climb up ropes. You also get a large range of new weapons from guns that can teleport you to heavy machine guns. If you've completed half-life and just can't get enough of annihilating aliens then get this game.
The half-life series is the best series of first person shooter games you will ever play.

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, 5 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Opposing Force finds you cruising around Black Mesa Research Labs in a nice new army flak vest. You play as Adrian Shepard, a government soldier sent into the Labs to clean up the alien mess left by those damn scientists. Again.

As you move through the game new, more powerful weapons will find themselves in your possession, and new, more powerful aliens will try to stop you finding any more. Permanentely.

Being a soldier you see the labs from a different perspective and, in my eyes, it is better because you have more allies. Fellow soldiers and security gaurds provide valuable cover-fire, and scientists if required (after they have served their purpose) can be used for target practice or cannon fodder.

The game obviously has a Half-Life feel about it but offers almost completely new areas, also, players of Half-Life will recognise some of the scenes as being from the original. Nice touch. The game itself is, unfortunately, a bit small esspecially in the shadow of Half-Life but is still very, very good.
