The twelfth in Mark Doyle's Hed Kandi compilations revisits disco house, following the first volume released in the early months of 2000. The label listing says it all--Azuli, Defected, Subliminal, Junior Boys own and Strictly Rhythm all contribute, Mark Doyle's genuine love of the music shining through the two-tier track listing. The first CD concerns itself with the filling of the dance floor, the rising filters of Hustle Espanol providing the analogy--grinding away at the bassline with squealing keyboard lines and clattering Latin percussion before setting the stage for the second disc of rippling dance-floor bangers with Farley and Heller's Mark Anthoni's "If You Should Need A Friend". Big vocal pieces come courtesy of "Higher" from David Morales and Dave Lee in his Joey Negro guise with the fabulously opulent "Must Be The Music". Put a smile on your face. --Kingsley Marshall

Out of the whole collection of disco Kandi, by Hed Kandi records, i have to say that this one is the best. As it says on the cd, its a glittering collection of the sexiest disco house and upliftng US garage. The first cd starts of with a really uplifting spanish style song in which you can't resist moving your shoulders around to. The whole first cd is more chilled than the second but not in a way its relaxing. If you are into your music then you will understand what i mean when i say that you get drawn in to it, and you want to let this music take over. The second cd is a lot more bouncier, you really want to stand up and dance around your bedroom for the first song on this cd! A lot of the songs on the whole album are unheard of because it is an american imported cd, but if you are a lover of funky house you will have heard a few of these songs in funky house clubs. On the whole this cd is a quality cd. If you want background music on a night in, or whilst getting ready to go out or driving in the car this is the cd to listen to. You won't be able to resist the funky beats!

The stylish folks at Hed Kandi are carving out a nice little niche of house and disco compilations, and this, their second in the series and twelfth release overall, is a pleasing slice of dance-friendly, mostly underground cuts. The emphasis here is slower vocal house and latin-flavored grooves, slowly stroking the party over 22 songs an excitable lather.

Santessa’s gentle summer anthem “Nowhere,” is the first and best song you’ll find, but there’s plenty to choose from: the floor-filler “(Do the) Spanish Hustle,” the Aretha-led hug of “Rise Up” and the guitar strummin’ “La Chitara” all stand out among the more obvious but effective cuts.

DJ-holics should be prepared to find these selections unmixed (a practice as rare in dance as the polyester suit) . Frankly, in an era where the mantra is “Power to the ProTools” it’s quite refreshing.

A solid primer for that big night out.

Well, what can I say? After enjoying the original Disco Kandi, I wondered how it could have been bettered, however Mark Doyle's taste on DK2 is quite outstanding. CD1 has some of those classic "afterparty" grooves that make you just get up & dance. B2B, CD2 keeps the body in shape in ways going to the gym can't! A must for those who like to party!
