Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

GoldenEye 007 has been a huge success for Rareware, and it's easy to see why. More than a simple movie translation, this has earned its top-seller status on its own. Fans of Doom and Quake will recognise the first-person shooter perspective, but there the similarity ends. James Bond 007 has too much style to simply blast everything in sight and move to the next level. No, as 007, the player has a variety of different missions to perform, each with its own specific objectives. Each mission follows the film closely, and so Bond must use stealth and cunning as much as brute force. But if you see a Kalashnikov rifle lying around, by all means pick it up.

Controls are easy to master, which is impressive considering the variety of actions the onscreen hero can perform. Bond can run and walk at variable speeds, duck, pivot, hide, attach mines to enemy helicopters, block doors from opening, and more. The optional auto-aim feature is especially nice. Of course, James Bond is proficient in a wide variety of weapons. You get to use them all, from the trusty Walther PPK (with silencer) to double sets of full-auto machine guns.

The game's faithful tribute to the Bond legacy includes briefing dossiers on each mission, complete with wisecracks from Q and flirtatious comments from Miss Moneypenny. And the 3-D representation of locations and characters from the movie is very impressive.

One of the distinguishing features of the game is the outstanding artificial intelligence of the enemies. When attacked, squads will rush to hit the alarm. If they make it, reinforcements come running. Enemy soldiers respond to being shot or blown up with chilling realism. According to Rareware, there are over 30 different animation routines that come into play, depending on where the soldier is hit. For those who prefer the challenge of human opponents, there are six clever multiplayer modes where up to four players can shoot it out, as teams or solo agents.

With excellent gameplay, intelligence, and style, GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter that'll keep you coming back for more. --Jeanne Uy

    Pros:
  • Built-in save capability for up to four players
  • Auto-aim feature helps novice players feel like a sharpshooter
  • Rich, complex gameworld filled with detail and variety
  • Great bonus missions
    Cons:
  • Sometimes cinematic scenes for fulfilling mission objectives are a bit anticlimactic

Manufacturer's Description

GoldenEye 007 brings the world's most famous secret agent, James Bond, to life on the Nintendo 64--complete with license to kill. Using the full power of the Nintendo 64, GoldenEye 007 puts you right into 007's tux and bow tie in a first-person action spectacular. But there is more to it than just blowing away bad guys--you will have to accomplish a variety of espionage objectives, like planting covert modems, copying top secret documents and diverting the destructive course of the rogue GoldenEye satellite system.

GoldenEye 007 puts would-be double "O" operatives through the paces in 20 challenging missions, each with three different difficulty levels. With each difficulty level, the intelligence of your opponents increases and the complexity and number of objectives grows. Following and expanding on the story line of the hit movie, GoldenEye 007's missions span the globe; from a secret base in arctic Russia to the a giant satellite antenna cradle suspended over the steaming jungles of Cuba.

While the actual game's budget is of course, Top Secret, Nintendo have spared no expense in creating one of the most immersive gaming experiences ever. Almost two years in the making, the game is worth the wait. To capture the atmosphere of the movie, the game's developers visited the movie sets several times during production to gather research materials. The designers used photographs, movie footage and actual blueprints of the sets to create the complex level layouts. The result is one of the most realistic 3-D, first-person games ever. GoldenEye adds an unbeatable license to thrill.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldeneye 007, 19 Jul 2005
By A Customer
An excellent game that sticks in your mind long after you have thrown you N64 away. This game is fantastic due to the detail, exciting missions, brilliant multiplayer mode and great sound effects. I remember multiplayers with mates from school and how we spent hours blowing each other up and and battaling it out for victory and generally having great fun! Even just the sound effects in the game are great because of their crisp sound and explosions sounded realistic unlike some modern games. This game should go down in history as one of the (if not, the) best games ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great but a bit dated, 24 Jul 2002
By A Customer
This is without a doubt one of the best games ever created and if you've never played it, it's worth buying an N64 for.

If you've played Turok or any other shooting game your probably only do the game on normal difficulty then give up. Goldeneye makes you do all of them and once that's done there are all the cheats to unlock. Nothing can beat Golden Gun, Facility multiplayer, even though this game is very basic compared to todays online games. Nothing can beat a 4 player battle with friends in the same room.

So if you want to play the game which has changed first person shooting games forever look no further.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable, 21 Jun 2005
By Jez Thompson (Stockholm) - See all my reviews
These days the gaming industry is plagued with first person shooters, the good, the amazing and the darn right shameful. For me Goldeneye is the game that inspired many others in its path, but still remains the best why is this? Well for a start its original, theres no flying planes or anything fancy like newer FPS its to the point bond action. The levels are fantastic mixing a vairety of stupid and challging CPU openants with objectives scattered accross the level. Take a look at the Timesplitters series for example, yes perhaps the multiplayer is one of the best on the newer consoles but the single player has always been at fault. No game will match Goldeneyes novelty, the cheats are fantastic much fun can be had with these, to make it even more rewarding you have to earn the cheats by doing the level in a certain way, although if you look hard enough you can find the codes. And multiplayer, im creaming my panties right now thinking about it, running around Russian archives against other plays blowing the hell out of anything that moves with a rocket launcher. There is so much to do, 3 levels of user difficulty, secret leves to unlock and other hidden modes, the levels have a spice of replayablitly to them, you can go back whenever you like select a level explore and just have fun, afterall thats what games are for right? In my view the N64 is the best console you can find, it may not have DVD or anything but who gives a crap we bought the nintendo becuase we want to play games and have fun, enough of these complicated long-winded games VIVA LA N64!
