Imagine if Palace's Will Oldham--or perhaps compatriot Tom Waits--had grown up in the rarefied surrounds of Dalarna, Sweden where there's little to do except admire the trees and create oddly poignant lo-hi-fi-folk. Herman Dune are very disconcerting. Tracks such as "Drug-Dealer in the Park" and the bittersweet "Shakespeare and North Hoyne" take full advantage of the fact that English is brothers David Ivar and Andre (plus drummer Ome)'s second language to create vivid stream-of-consciousness images. Guitars rattle, drums occasionally pound. On the devotional "You're so Far From Me", David sings with a slight lisp over bottleneck guitars and cavernous space which fully reflect his upbringing. Elsewhere, Andre's "Ulrika's Body" threatens to break into fully-fledged pathos. Turn Off The Light is an extraordinary debut. --Jerry Thackray
