3 classic matches, 24 Jun 2004
Every match on this video doesn't set the world alight, but there isn't a particularly bad match either. There are 3 outstanding matches here that are quite diverse and all deserve a special mention:The first being an unlikely tag match, Teaming arch enemies Tajiri and Super Crazy, against Little Guido and Jerry Lynn, this match doesn't need tables and chairs. The blistering pace, countless reversals and unpredictable finish, make this a pure wrestling match and a very enjoyable one at that. Rob Van Dam vs Sabu is a battle between the companies big 2, and this match is a show case for both men's innovated use of chairs and tables. But don't get me wrong this match doesn't solely rely on the use of weapons (like Nu Jacks match does), it is a well executed, high flying wrestling match that uses the chairs and tables intelligently to add an extra dimension. A decent pace, the impressive improvisational use of the furniture and high flying moves make this a very entertaining match. This is what ECW was invented for! The main event between monstrous Mike Awesome and little Spike Dudley doesn't sound like a fair match up, and it isn't! I don't think I have ever seen so many tables broken in one match! But again, this match doesn't just rely on destroying furniture; there is wrestling and a story to back it up. It is genuinely compelling to see massive underdog Spike defying the odds to hang in there with Awesome. The underdog angle makes this a genuinely enthralling match that has some truly spectacular table breaks. The tag title match between The Impact Players and Raven /Tommy Dreamer, also deserves a brief mention as it is an entertaining match, without being anything special. This is a ECW video that gets the balance of wrestling and hardcore action just right for maximum entertainment. It is true that there are ECW events were the overall quality is more constant than this one, but the 3 matches mentioned above equal anything on any other ECW event and well make this video worth a look.
