Synopsis

BABY CART AT THE RIVER STYX, the second of the classic LONE WOLF AND CUB samurai films, finds Ogami Itto (Tomisaburo Wakayama) and his infant son continuing on their bloody path of vengeance. This time they seek the shadowy Yagyu clan, who try to kill the father and son--first by sending their female ninja warriors and then the sadistic, self-proclaimed Gods of Death.

5.0 out of 5 stars "I am the assassin Lone Wolf and Cub... at your service!", 26 Nov 2000
By A Customer
The second film in the "Lone Wolf & Cub" series... this film is the continuing saga of Itto Ogami, an ex-Shogun's Exectutioner, framed for treason by the evil Yagyu clan (see "Sword of Vengeance" for this), and his young son Daigoro. together they are known as "Lone Wolf And Cub" This is arguably the best film in the series, with a group of women attempting to kill Ogami, and a showdown at the end with the three "Gods of Death"...

The DVD is based on the AnimEigo print, which means it is a) in Japanese Language and b) has excellent English subtitles and occsionally some supertitles with information on Japanese terms. The subtitles are burned into the print (but in the "black bars" so it doesn't conceal any of the action), and so cannot be turned off. It is in Widescreen format (1.85:1 I think) and picture quality is ok, but certainly not crystal clear... it is slightly blurry, hazy, very dark and a little grainy. Extras are almost non-existant; The only extras included are Synergy's own trailers for the other 5 films.

If you have only seen this film as "Shogun Assassin" I'd sincerely recommend watching this film and "Sword of Vengeance", as Shogun Assassin was a dubbed edit of these two films.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bloody, but entertaining Samurai adventure, 17 Oct 2001

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Based on the excellent and very popular Lone Wolf and Cub graphic novels, this film is the second in a set of six which follow the adventures of Ogami Itto the disgraced executioner and master swordsman as he travels Edo period Japan seeking vengeance against his enemies the Yaygu clan.
It is extremely bloody, but the story is interesting and the protagonists fatalistic quest for personal vengeance is refreshing in a 'hero'.
A bit like the terminator, Ogami is unstoppable, but imbued with pathos rather than wisecracks or one liners he is both more and less human as a consequence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't worry, there's only fifty of them, 6 Nov 2009

A goodly amount of cut & thrust with copious amounts of people being killed in ludicrous ways. They never seemed to tire in the old days, a guy could hack his way through an entire gang without breaking into a sweat. Its great fun and the story is relatively easy to follow, when considering most of these Japanese films are heavily edited/chopped to satisfy western attention spans and our desire to see the end of a movie while we can still remember the begining
