2.0 out of 5 stars Midway Between Good and Bad, 19 April 2002
By A Customer
For CFS1, those flyers who lack Pacific Warplanes, this is ot badbut neither is it really good. The best points are the aircraft textures & the missions (which bear some resemblance to historical truth);the bad parts are the cockpit panels, which are lacking true authenticity. Actually they appear to be made up of panels & gauges from the existing CFS planes!

What have we here then? A collection of some, but by no means all, the cambat planes of the Battle for Midway, the great turning point for America & Japan in WW2,when Japan lost too many aircraft carriers that it could in o way replace quickly enough to continue the fight. So here, the missions call on aspects of the US forces from US Carriers & miidway Island based planes to find(!) and destroy the Japanese carriers & ships & planes before they do likewise to the Americans. It seems that the 20 mmissions follow likely scenearios. All American, though.

AS for flying, there is a great range of types(12), 6 US,6 Jap. There is a big B17 flying from Midway, that doen't last long against Zero Fighters. It is of course somewhat different to the B17 in CFS(Which CAN be flown,by renaming its file "P51d" and deleting that plane!).There is an OLD Devastator, showing the lack of preparationn America had,as its slo approach speed (simulated here)made torpedo attacks near suicidal! The Dauntless is th best rendered, and also old, but effective to the degree that it continued in actio even along side its replacement (the Helldiver). There is also a P38 (again different from the CFS (also flyable!)version. The panel in this is unpromising, and that annoyed me.

As for the Japs, they get Zero fighters (No great panel here again) and torpedo & "Val" dive bombers(a la Pearl Harbor) to have a go in Quick combat(or if you change some aircraft names,in missions too!being v.clever!)against US ships.

What is missing to the historical truth? Well, there is no Catalina(spotter plane with ltd combat ability)and no Liberator, but the smaller, more nippy planes do the job. Still, all vastly more accurately
true and entertaining than tha film of the same name!
