4.0 out of 5 stars The best 4th Symphony performance I've heard, 1 Sep 2000

My passion for Nielsen's symphonies goes back nearly 30 years and over that time I've heard many performances of the 4th Symphony, both live and on recordings. I bought this disk out of curiosity and was amazed by how convincing the performance of the 4th Symphony is. Schonwandt's pacing and the orchestral playing are first class and in particular he succeeds to my ears in combining a clear sense of the work's "line" with numerous instances of imaginative detail. The recording sounds excellent, with very natural perspectives. Well worth listening to, even if you already have other versions of the 4th (like Blomstedt's on Decca) which do justice to this thrilling score.

The 5th Symphony does not come off quite as well although this is still an excellent performance, full of integrity and very well played. (The historic recording by Jensen on Dutton Labs is in a class of its own).
