From its promiscuous mongrel origins, to its days in the sun as the plaything of such composers as Stravinsky, Weill and Thomas Ad&eagrave;s, the tango has proved itself a most adaptable form. It undergoes yet another transformation for this disc, and depending on how camp you like your throbbing passion and heaving bosoms, the result is a big, blowsy success. Catalan composer and pianist Albert Guinovart has arranged some of the most famous tangos of all time--including the inevitable "Jalousie" by Jacob Gade--for piano and symphony orchestra. His tongue ever so slightly in his cheek, he doesn't stint on the swirling piano glissandi or crashing brass chords, and the effect is gorgeously inauthentic and extravagant. Throw American soprano Julia Migenes--discarding her famous honeyed tones to belt and rasp with lusty abandon--into the mix, and you have the icing on the cake. The murder, passion, betrayal and constrained sexual hysteria that underlines so much tango survives here only in a kind of Disneyfied form, but that is the fun of the whole gig. --Warwick Thompson
