One of the great virtuoso violinists of his day, either side of the Great War, Albert Sammons nonetheless had a deep aversion to "abroad" and never matched Fritz Kreisler for international acclaim. He was at his happiest giving recitals anywhere and everywhere in the UK--and these charming salon pieces were on hand as counterweights to more serious fare. The son of a shoemaker, Sammons received only the bare bones of a formal training (in fact he was an entirely self-taught composer), and first made his mark leading orchestras in hotels and restaurants. These pieces must reflect the stylistic influence of music he played at such venues. The melodies are never less than melting (try the Roumanian Air) and opportunities for violinistic trickery (as in Dance Caprice) come along regularly. The mood may be light, but such music doesn't play itself. The performer must steer just the right side of schmaltz and cope with some formidable technical demands. Paul Barritt (in the company of the excellent Catherine Edwards) has no problems on either count. As the backdrop to a lazy hour of tea and cream cakes with a maiden aunt at a Lyons' Corner House this is just the job. --Andrew Green
