Amazon.co.uk Review
This is a rather unique two-for-one tribute compilation. Composer collections are plentiful, but it's very rare for a producer to be acknowledged in any way, let alone given top billing alongside the composer. These suites from five of Val Lewton's productions while at RKO Radio Pictures are a belated appreciation of the intelligent craftsmanship he contributed to every aspect of film making, including scoring.
Body Snatcher and
Cat People were both directed by Robert Wise, who explains in the detailed booklet notes how both were attempts to leave behind the usual genre bombast. All commentary on Webb is warmly flattering, and paints the picture of someone who fell between the cracks of Golden Age fame. This forgotten man nevertheless supplies a 70-minute body of work (culled from a 300-picture career) that is easily as melodically strong--and thereby memorable--as his contemporaries. The additional titles (
Bedlam,
The Seventh Victim, and
I Walked With a Zombie) all suggest B-movie chintz, but are full of beauty and depth. All involved in this re-recording are to be congratulated for allowing us to be caught by Webb. --
