The Beethoven is one of the most controversial issues of all time. For some it is over-hasty, lacking 'depth'. For others like me it is a tremendous performance, bringing out all the poetry and drama of this wonderful music. Sadly one thing remains indisputable - the sound is awful, recorded in RCA's notorious Studio 8-H which ruined many of Toscanini's recordings, castrating the sound into a thin, anaemic line. This new transfer, however, is the best chance yet to hear this partnership of two great musical minds at a very low price. Strangely, the Brahms is the better sound although still primitive. This was Heifetz at his best, slightly more relaxed and lyrical than in his later recording with Reiner, which remains tops for me because of the far better sound. But this disc should be heard by all music lovers, especially at the super-budget price.
