Quake changed my life!, 4 Mar 2004
Quake must be the most influential and inspiring game I have ever played. I remember back in 1996 when the original Quake was in the shops, I managed to persuade my dad to buy it for me but it didn't work on my PC back then because I didn't have a floating point processor. Man, I was gutted. I was able to see it working on my cousin's PC and I was absolutely blown away. I couldn't wait to get my PC upgraded so that it would work. Eventually it all came true! Quake was original, medieval and that was what was great about it. Quake II wasn't as good, because the story was naff and it wasn't medieval anymore. Quake was primaily based on multiplayer and this is what Quake II picked up on, so the deathmatch maps got better, but the single player wasn't very good. Quake III made the right moves and went back to the originality of Quake with medieval maps and the deathmatch levels were fantastic.Everyone raves on about Half-life, Halo, Unreal, and I will be frank, these are great games, but ID Software made the Doom series in the 90's, so for me ID Software's games have always been the most original. For me, putting Doom and Quake next to these other first-person-shooter games... how can I explain it, it's like getting one director to make the first movie and another director to make the sequels. The sequels are never as good as the first and they essentially (apologies for sounding blunt) "steal" from the original that made it happen. Quake III for me is an amazing game. Doom, Wolfenstein and Quake - they are all different games, but because they are from ID Software, you can be rest assured that you are getting a blinding game. Not only that but Internet play that is better than it is in any other shooter game, rest assured. With Quake, you get expansion packs, you can make your own maps, mod's weapons, bot's (enemies), and download other people's stuff as well. Perhaps these other games, you can download stuff for them too, but looking at my watch - they are a little bit late, Quake came up with the idea ageas ago and if it means I have to keep this PC in order to play my Quake games, then so be it. I am a bit worried about Quake IV, as it is not by ID, but it is by Rogue Software (who made an expansion pack for Quake I and II), so it might not be bad. Hopefully it will still keep the Quake community going. Well I'm sure the Quake community will ever die out. Doom III is coming out soon and I can't wait for that. Quake changed my life. Quake III changed my life and nothing seems the same to be without Quake on my PC, it's never too late to catch up with the series. goto www.planetquake.com to find out what the fuss is about!
