Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

When she dropped the twang in favour of torch with Ingenue back in 1992, KD Lang became a multi-million selling voice, but projects like the soundtrack to Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and the smoking concept album Drag have sidelined her talents. Invincible Summer will undoubtedly restore her to glory with its lush melodies, beautiful arrangements and astute production. As the title suggests, the album eschews her darker moments in favour of a breezy, carefree mood that suggests the bloom of love and bright optimism. Tracks like "Extraordinary Thing" and "Summerfling" soar and skip, bursting with rich melodic joy, lifted by breathless orchestration. There are moments of quiet reflection too, like the opening number "Consequences Of Falling In Love", the Bacharach and David tinged "Suddenly" and the luxuriant "Love's Great Ocean". Throughout, Damien Le Gassick--who engineered Madonna's Ray Of Light--maintains a tasteful but contemporary production sheen of bubbling electronic effects that should help Lang find a new audience. --Mike Pattenden

CD Description

Since abandoning the neo-country sound cultivated on her first three albums, K.D. Lang has spent the new few albums in chanteuse mode, poking around in a playland of sophisticatedpop. On 2000's INVINCIBLE SUMMER, the Canadian songbird looks to a quote from Camus for the title and then loosens the reins considerably, putting together a collection of dreamy,Burt Bacharach-flavoured songs reflective of her relocationfrom the Canadian hinterlands to sunny Southern California.
Teaming with William Orbit protege Damian leGassick, Lang conjures up 11 tracks soaked in an aura of ambiance. Amongthe elements lacing these songs are hints of bossa nova ("Suddenly"), quirky pop goosed along by Eurodisco string arrangements ("It's Happening with You") and a swirling mix of Lang's sultry vocals in a homage to Roy Orbison ("Love's GreatOcean"). Throughout all of SUMMER, the thread that ties allthese songs together is love, ranging from how uncomplicated it can be (the sparsely arranged "Simple") to the yearningfelt for a secret love (the lush "When We Collide"). Best of all is "What Better Said", a sinewy song awash in electronic beeps and beats that finds Lang waiting for a reciprocated declaration of love.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kick back and chill out with a happy k.d.lang, 18 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Summer may not have actually happened in the UK but KD Lang is determined to make it happen in your CD player. After the underated All You Can Eat and the patchy Drag, Invincible Summer is a fairly new direction for Ms Lang. The lovely voice and country heritage remain but this is a more commercial version of the singer. Her new personal happiness is so blatant within the music that at times it's overwhelming. Songs such as Extrodinary Thing and Summerfling grab the theme of romance and run with it. Her knack for a memorable melody remains especially in When We Collide and Curiosity. With such lush arrangements and with such a big smile on her face the album does veer towards sickly but the murky nature of love's great ocean and the quirky funk of it's happening with you serve to redress the balance. So an enjoyable reminder of how sweet love can be as well a musical delight. However it remains to be seen whether I'll be listening to it between the months of October and May.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding magnificence of an incredibly beautiful woman, 29 Jul 2000
How can anyone fail to be impressed with this CD. I've waited a long time to hear her voice again. Boy! has it been worth the wait? You bet it has. My happiest moments have come during listening to this sweetest sound. Take a deep breath and imbibe yourself with some powerful vocals. Excellent. Brilliant. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Capturing the Beauty of the Summer Sun, 21 Aug 2000
By A Customer
A true artist can re-invent themselves, stretch themselves and shatter the labels others have pinned on them. It doesnt matter what this Albertan songstress has done in the past, her voice, that effortless breezy voice, blows you away. My favorite track has changed with each listen (always a good sign!). Listen to it in a rolltop under the summer sun (not currently available in England) cruising some backroads and you will feel the power of her craft. Forget your prejudices, just listen to it first!
