Amazon.co.uk Review

The ultimate small-screen representation of Loaded-era lad culture--albeit a culture constantly being undermined by its usually sharper female counterpart--there seems little argument that Men Behaving Badly was one of 1990s' definitive sitcoms. Certainly the booze-oriented, birds-obsessed antics of Martin Clunes' Gary and Neil Morrissey's Tony have become every bit as connected to Britain's collective funny bone as Basil Fawlty's inept hostelry or Ernie Wise's short, hairy legs.

Yet, the series could easily have been cancelled when ITV viewers failed to respond to the original version, which featured Clunes sharing his flat with someone named Dermot, played by Harry Enfield. Indeed, it was only when the third series moved to the BBC and was then broadcast in a post-watershed slot--allowing writer Simon Nye greater freedom to explore his characters' saucier ruminations--that the show began to gain a significant audience.

By then, of course, Morrissey had become firmly ensconced on the collective pizza-stained sofa, while more screen time was allocated to the boys' respective foils, Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash. Often glibly dismissed as a lame-brained succession of gags about sex and flatulence, the later series not only featured great performances and sharp-as-nails writing but also sported a contemporary attitude that dared to go where angels, and certainly most other sitcoms, feared to tread. Or, as Gary was once moved to comment about soft-porn lesbian epic Love in a Women's Prison: "It's a serious study of repressed sexuality in a pressure-cooker environment."

Series 6 includes: "Stag Night" in which Gary agrees with Dorothy's suggestion they get married ("We've tried everything else.") provoking potentially disastrous stag-night shenanigans; "Wedding" in which Gary and Dorothy's wedding day fails to run smoothly. ("I don't want to get married--I haven't slept with enough women," he complains. "Do you want to squeeze one in?"); "Jealousy" in which the quartet make the grave error of going away for a weekend in the country; "Watching TV" concerns a quiet night in with Captain Kirk & Co ("On the Starship Enterprise, when no one's looking, do you think they all swivel round in their chairs really fast?"); "Ten" in which the communal boat is rocked by the simultaneous arrival of Dorothy's nephew and Deborah's mother; and "Sofa" in which Tony buys a snake. --Clark Collis

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the best of the bunch, 5 Sep 2003
It's easy to see why the series had to come to an end. The actors were no longer thirty-somethings. We all knew that Leslie Ash had been married for years to Lee Chapman, that Caroline Quentin was about to divorce Paul Merton, that even Martin Clunes had settled down and was starting a family. The only one who seemed to live his alter-ego lifestyle in reality was Neil Morrisey. He was having it away with Les Dennis's wife, getting pissed with his mates, buying a local pub so he wouldn't get thrown out after last orders etc etc.

So, this series draws a close on MBB. There was a one-off Christmas special the same year (Jingle B***s), and a three episode Christmas finale two years later (that ends with Gary and Dorothy's daughter being born), but this was the end of the half-hour episodes.

Series 5 ended showing Gary being unfaithful to Dorothy with one of the girls from next door. Dorothy has found out, so to keep her sweet Gary offers to marry her. And she accepts.
The first episode is Gary's stag night and Dorothy's hen night. The second episode is the wedding itself, but because the registrar faints things don't go according to plan. The third episode has all four of them going off in a caravan for the weekend. The fourth episode is an oddity - it is entirely filmed with the gang sitting in front of the TV watching Star Trek. The fifth episode has Dorothy's ten-year old nephew staying with them, and Tony meeting Deb's mum for the first time. The final episode sees Gary getting rid of his sofa, and Tony getting rid of a snake he bought from a bloke down the pub.

There are some really good bits in this series - Tony at last getting off with Debs, the farmer who owns the caravan park, taking the mickey out of each other in front of the TV (Captain's log, Mexican wave, Mr Spong), Tony's perm. There are also some pretty weak bits - the wedding is all filmed on Clive's cam-corder which becomes really annoying after a while. Tony is really irritating in the episode where they go caravanning and he steals a tractor, which isn't very funny. The sections where Tony and Gary remember back to their youth in the final episode are also a bit dis-jointed.

Notes for trivia fans. Deb's mum is played by the same woman who plays Cassandra's mum in OF&H. And the girl that Tony throws up over in Sofa was Susan, the motel receptionist in I'm Alan Partridge.

This DVD has a well-designed menu system, four sets of multiple-choice questions that each reward you with a collection of hilarious outtakes and the whole of series 6. Superb. Break out the lagers and have your very own lock-in.
