This is a magical disc. I have always preferred recordings of oratorios performed with countertenor rather than contralto, but have to sometimes concede the traditionalists' argument that the male voice can sometimes seem sterile when placed against a good, expressive female contralto. In Scholl we find the perfect antidote, his voice having a warmth, beauty and above all clarity to challenge the best.

And Vivaldi! The Four Seasons is so done to death that I jump straight from Verdi to Wagner when browsing in the CD store. On this recording we have alternately bright/vibrant and mournful/atmospheric. A involving and entertaining programme which leaves you wanting more. The Australian ensemble prove that period playing can learn much from the Pacific rim, as Suzuki in Japan has already shown.

As the disc finished I was reaching for the remote to start it again. If you buy this recording I hope you'll see why....

I am not sure why I bought this disc, but I'm happy I did. It was probably because I like Vivaldi, and was interested to hear more of his vocal music (and less of The Four Seasons). The disc consists of 29 tracks divided into 6 pieces. The 1st 9 tracks are of "Nisi Dominus" that is very dynamic and reminiscent of high-church music. Both "Concerto For Strings In F Major" and "Concerto For Strings In C Major" are more secular, gay and create an image in my mind of Venice is its full splendour. "Clarae stellae" also creates a compelling, but more chaste, image of Venice. Then there is "Vestro Principi divino", and the disc closes with the sacred music of "Salve Regina", very powerful. The music mixes the counter tenor voice of Andreas Scholl with strings and an organ. The voice of Andreas Scholl is absolutely fantastic, with clarity of expression and purity of sound really out of this world. I am not a big fan of classical music, but this is really something else. Great listening music - just what you need when you put your feet up in front of a nice fire and start an interesting book.

Absolutely brilliant! Andreas Scholl has not only a beautiful voice but also full understanding of what Vivaldi wanted to convey, not least the composer's deep faith. This makes the recording a very moving experience as well as an intellectual gem!
