Product Description
On his latest international release, King Sunny Ade sticks to the Nigerian juju sound he's perfected over the course of 30 years-swirling keyboards, multiple guitars, a funky beat punctuated by talking drums, and sly, seductive lead vocals backed by a cool chorus. Singing in Yoruba, Ade discourses on politics, recites proverbs and praises God. And though he hasn't gotten as much press as Metallica vs. Napster, he also fights music piracy in Africa. So as you feel good, you can know that the man also does good-or maybe you just want to pulse with the groove.
Description
Juju is party music first and foremost, but with 2000's SEVEN DEGREES NORTH, legendary Nigerian bandleader King Sunny Ade has, for the first time, explicitly injected politics into his music, albeit in a typically inclusive, non-confrontational way. Named after the latitudinal position of Lagos anddedicated to the continued success of the Nigerian democracy movement which was recently successful in toppling a decades-long military dictatorship, SEVEN DEGREES NORTH has little anger or resentment; celebratory titles like "Merciful God" and "Solution '96" get the point across with little recrimination. Best of all, this is purely traditional juju, with none of the trappings of electronic Western dance music which started appearing in Nigerian pop in the late '90s. Hypnotically rhythmic, with sparklingly melodic call-and-response vocals and talking drums, SEVEN DEGREES NORTH is typically magnificent juju.
