Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

It would be unrealistic to expect David Toop to recreate the giddy excesses of Jeff Noon's prose. In Needle In The Groove, Noon is head-over-heels with the idea of music imbibed like a drug that switches rhythm in tune with the listener's metabolism. Toop takes this basic premise and runs with it. His music ably fills out the frequencies left vacant by the writer's nasal mancunian accent, which slithers in and out of the text. On "Scorched Out For Love", the book's theme song, Toop creates a soundtrack that howls like a trapped animal and periodically retreats to nurse its wounds, while Noon fixates on sing-song lyrical fragments, repeating them like a psychotropic nursery rhyme. On "Bass Instruction 1", he clips a female voice into a stuttering chord progression and repeats the motif for a further two instalments. With its repeated themes and extended freestyle passages, the soundtrack shadows the novel's (de)structure. It does this without using the text as a crutch, opening the doors of perception for future spoken music collaborations of this ilk. --Chris Campion

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 30 Sep 2000
By A Customer
Having read the book, I was very disappointed by the cd. I expected something deep, gripping and moving, instead the cd contains a uniformly spaced out tune. The book applies the concept of a remix to the writing style and the plot, whereas the artist making the cd seems to be totally ignorant of this concept.

You just have to read the book, but forget about the cd. It's quite a spoiler.
