Long before it opened, this Brenda Blethyn comedy received rave reviews from festival screenings. The story follows a woman who turns her green thumb to cultivating a marijuana crop to save her home, and comes with a soundtrack that seems predictable from the track listing, but proves far more interesting. It's some accomplishment: any album that manages to feature Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In the Sky" and not be overwhelmed by the ubiquitously-hooked classic rocker deserves kudos, and the other pop songs here are more than up to the jib. There's Filter's "Take a Picture", which sounds like a great, lost track from James; the suitably spacy "Sunshine At Last", by Koot; an ace mix (from Tin Tin Out) of the Pretenders' "Human"; the Squeeze-esque "Might As Well Go" from Plenty; and newcomer Sherena Dugani's "Accidental Angel"--by rights a summer anthem of a pop song. Mark Russell's score is varied and consistent, fitting the mood perfectly; this TV veteran (he's probably best known for his work on "Cold Feet" and "The Peter Principle") shifts between maudlin and playful, funky and far-out. The dialogue blended throughout the CD gives the general storyline and actually enhances the cohesion of the collection; as either an accompaniment or an advertisement for the film, it more than fits the bill.
