Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Between heroic spells as the Saint and James Bond, Roger Moore was teamed with Tony Curtis in this derivative but fun series about a couple of millionaire dilettante adventurers who swan around the world competing for the attention of beautiful women and getting involved in perplexing mysteries. Moore is Lord Brett Sinclair, an upper crust Brit of impeccable breeding, while Curtis is Danny Wilde, an up-from-the-streets self-made man whose trademark is a pair of brown gloves. The allegedly tasteful Brett and the crasser Danny both model a succession of garish early 70s fashions while their pursuits of duplicitous crumpet usually wind up with the women getting away and the heroes stuck with each other. Given that, this may well be the most blatantly homoerotic of all the buddy television pairings (see the eponymous stars of Starsky and Hutch, Regan and Carter in The Sweeney, Bodie and DoyleThe Professionals) that ran over the screen in the 70s, sublimating their feelings for each other by pulling out their guns and shooting at baddies.

Volume One includes: "Overture" which features a gangster who has faked his own death and a brunette with a birthmark, with guest star Imogen (When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth) Hassall; and "Angie... Angie", which concerns a murder at the Cannes Film Festival, with Larry (F Troop) Storch. --Kim Newman

Synopsis

'Overture' sees Brett and Danny meeting for the first time. 'Angie, Angie' is set at the Cannes Film Festival.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two classic episodes-back to back!, 14 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Good packaging, Good design, Good episodes-all make for a winning combination for a Good series that has just had a welcome re-issue on video. Curtis + Moore fight the foes and woo the women as unlikely partners in crime, Wilde + Sinclair. They are brought together by crafty crime-seeking Judge Fulton(Laurence Naismith) in the pilot episode on this video, 'Overture'. This episode is one of the classics of the series and has a great mix of action, adventure and laughs, and was certainly a taste of things to come. Great scenery filmed in Monte Carlo and the surrounding areas on the French Riviera with great footage of the characters' flashy choice of cars competing for the roads. You'll also like the bevvy of beauties that feature in this episode with a twist of an ending. 'Angie, Angie' is another earlier 'Persuaders' episode and is certainly one of the more serious scripts of all the twenty-four that were made in the series. A change from the tongue-in-cheek scenarios, this is a rightful classic in itself. It touches on nostalgia and sentimentality for the past, but still has the right mix of humour at the right time: Danny Wilde(Tony Curtis)unexpectedly meets up with an old pal from the bronx, whilst Brett Sinclair(Roger Moore) experiences an assassination attempt on an ex-Union Boss' life and both events ironically happen at the Cannes Film Festival. 'The Persuaders!' was one of the better ITC series ever made with certainly one of the best theme tunes ever performed for a series by the master of the Bond signatures, John Barry. A rare and great combination of clever casting by ATV mogul Lord Lew Grade and producer Robert S.Baker, saw Curtis + Moore spark off each other on and off screen. Buy this video-you'll really like it!
