Amazon.co.uk Review

The secret to "getting" Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow is appreciating that it's the film he's wanted to make his whole life. After the intimately expressive Edward Scissorhands, this is his most personal venture. Burton's Gothic style--apparent through all his work--stems from a childhood misspent watching the horror movies of Roger Corman, Hammer studios, and anything featuring his idol Vincent Price. For Sleepy Hollow Burton surrounded himself with his usual collaborators and friends; the production was almost entirely shot on location outside London to reunite him with key members of the crew he'd used a decade earlier in Batman, and also to capture the atmosphere of Hammer horror on its own turf.

Johnny Depp's Constable Ichabod Crane warmly emulates the mannerisms and enunciation of Peter Cushing. In a prologue scene Burton plays out a long-held fantasy by pitting Depp against Christopher Lee. And it is fantasy that categorises the film throughout, from the mythical fireside telling of the Hessian Horseman's origin (a mesmerising Christopher Walken), to the bright spots of colour saturating Crane's childhood dreams (featuring Burton's real-life love Lisa Marie). These moments literally shine out amid a meticulously crafted look for the film, which underwent a bleaching process to tone things down to an almost monochrome hue. The Scooby Doo-like whodunnit plot, concerning family lineage and petty vengeance, is naturally secondary to what Burton is aiming to achieve through photography and performance, which includes expressive cameos from Michael Gambon, Michael Gough, Jeffrey Jones, and Iain McDiarmid. Yet despite all these subtleties, it's also his best action movie: the swordplay betters anything from his earlier work, while the windmill escape and subsequent coach chase is truly breathtaking in choreography and execution. If you find a cheesy grin on your face for most of the film, you've "got" it. If not, see Hammer's Dracula at once! --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Great classic brought to life on the screen: creepy ghost story, but also an oldschool crime-solving story - top notch, 9 Sep 2007

What an excellent film this is!!!

The setting is superb, scenery and environment are absolutely beautiful, the camerawork is amazing.

Johnny Depp is playing a cowardly detective set to solve some brutal murders in the village of Sleepy Hollow. It turns out to be a really creepy ghost story, but also an oldschool crime-solving story. He portraits his characters with his very own sloppiness, fun and superb acting skills. Miranda Richardson in a pivotal role was equally superb.

Such movies are rare in these days, but Burton has really succeeded in this.Top notch
through out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gutsy, chuckle while you scream, Burton magic!, 29 Aug 2000
By A Customer
A bit of an impulse buy for me turned out to be an essential addition to the DVD shelf. Burton's return to the fore of the genre (which may very well soon be called the Burton genre) is an accomplished, edgy-but-fun film version of the origin American fairy tale which must be watched. Johnny Depp plays New Yorker Constable Ichabod Crane, the intelligent, squeamish detective sent to unearth the truth behind a series of beheadings in the Hudson Islands village of Sleepy Hollow. His work leads him into the arms of Katrina van Tassel (Christina Ricci) and a web of intreague in the village which involves witchcraft, legend revenge, love, and lost memories in equal measure.

Casper Van Dien adds another Hollywood face, and Ray Park (of Darth Maul fame) has his removed as the Hessian's sans-tete actor (Christopher Walken as the avec-tete version is bone chillingly terrifying to look at). Sleepy Hollow also includes some wonderful performances by Britain's finest - Michael Gambon delivering some lines with perfect judgement of comic timing and emphasis, Miranda Richardson acting with versatility and ferocity as well as Richard Griffiths and Ian McDiarmid finishing the set. Young performer Marc Pickering has an incredible ability for one so young, being almost the only unknown amongst a further cast of cameos from the likes of Christopher Lee and Martin Landau.

The DVD itself allows Burton's vision to burst to life in vivid detail, colour contrast and sound being incredibly rich and varied. Menus are cleverly designed and eerily presented. The extra features section is also well stocked with two features, pictures and trailers making compelling viewing. In fact the 'Reflections on Sleepy Hollow demonstrates how much Depp was acting in the film - to break from the grumpy teenager look and voice he has in real life. Burton's commentary, whilst lacking in much artistic insight is often thought provoking and sniggeringly funny throughout. Best of all it is presented in 1:1.85 ratio, allowing 3:4 and widescreen viewers alike to enjoy the legend. Well, what are you waiting for? Reach for your flexible pal and fill up your shopping baskets - this is one to buy. Burton has triumphed with this wry whodunnit/horror fest and you're all invited!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic horror to watch, 13 Aug 2004
Sleepy Hollow is a horror film with a difference. It is a gothic, fantasy, with murder mystery elements which can't help but capture your imagination and attention.
Sleepy Hollow is set in 1799, in the eerie little village of Sleepy Hollow.
Recently murders have swept through the village leaving it's inhabitants living in fear. The strangest part about these murders are that the victims heads are always missing!
The main character of this film is Ichabod Crane from New York City who is sent, to use science and reasoning to seek the truth. And just like every murder mystery, he has to find the clues to find the murderer. But in this murder mystery there is a twist!
This film is packed full of excitement, suspense, and mystery. It keeps your attention throughout adding more twists and turns to the plot as it goes.
This is the best horror film i have seen and is well worth buying, and the more times you watch it, the deeper you look into the truth.
The film not only features Johnny Depp, but also stars Christina Ricca, cameos :Christopher Lee and Christopher Walken, and it features Michael Gambon and Miranda Richardson. All these actors/actresses act to perfection and help make the film as brilliant as it is.

Sleepy Hollow is a film to be proud of in anyones film collection.
