Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
"Beg to report safe delivery of a strong, healthy last movement to my Second. Father and child doing as well as can be expected." So ran Mahler's jubilant message on completion of his "Resurrection" Symphony, which after several years' painful gestation had come together in his mind with a sudden flash of inspiration. It had begun as a single-movement funeral rite, and gradually taken shape under the influence of Schubert's music, but the choral conclusion of Beethoven's Ninth was its Grail.

Zubin Mehta's 25-year-old recording is a superb addition to the ranks of contending interpretations. It is lighter on its feet than Bernstein's classic version, with all the elements in Mahler's tonal landscape brought out in high relief: by turns lush, austere, grandiose, and intimate. Here is the Vienna Phil at its best, with two incomparable voices on the bridge--Christa Ludwig's steely mezzo and Ileana Cotrubas' soaring soprano. The "Legendary" on the cover is not hype: this is still as good as it gets. --Michael Church

4.0 out of 5 stars wondeful mahler, super orchestra, great feel for the music, great soloists, 17 Oct 2007

hard to believe one of the reviews complaining re the sound...listen to the cellos at start of 2nd movement, and the timps, and the horns, trumpets and trombones...simply great stuff....i prefer the original decca double with this recording and schmidt 4, also by mehta, a great symphony

i think the decca double original cd transfer is warmer, fruitier and more impactive than the new legends transfer

i have had this mahler 2 since LP and tape now cd, and it is MAGNIFICENT... the endIng is earth shattering as it should be

if u buy this and dont like it, i will refund your money (perhaps!!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Very highly rated performance that shows its age, 3 Jan 2006
By EthanUK (Highlands, Scotland) - See all my reviews
This verges on being *THE* performance to get of Mahler 2 and vies along with Klemperer's (which I prefer, as do most people). Personally I find it drags, and I don't like the sound-engineering or mixing at all. This is one of the few performances that gets the whole work onto a single CD so I cannot think why it sounds like it drags, but it does to me, it really does. There is no joy in this performance, it seems dry as dust. Rather than a recording done in the seventies, it sounds more like it was recorded in the thirties. Highly vibrato strings which are extremely directional. They come from two places, left and right tweeters - there is no expansiveness to the sound. At least there is no hiss but the recording sounds 'canned', nasal or shut-in. The Timpani sound less little kettle drums, more little kettles. I just do not like this performance, and the recording sounds awful on high-end audio equipment and my transmission line speakers can't seem to find any bass to relay.
For a modern performance I much prefer Tilson-Thomas's preformance which is often slated as over-the-top and overblown, but he sounds like he's enjoying the music, which is what I would rather do.
