Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

These classic broadcast performances from the Aldeburgh Festival, released with the co-operation of the BBC, remind us of just what a fine pianist Britten could be in music other than his own. His partnership with Rostropovich in the Shostakovich sonata and the Janácek pieces is admirably discreet--an equal whose role is in part to let the cellist shine. Britten took over at short notice in the British premiere of the Blok Romances for soprano and piano trio when Shostakovich was indisposed; these are one of the first of that sequence of eerie, haunted grim works in which Shostakovich's career was to culminate, and Vishnevskaya's powerful voice conveys all their mystery and gloom. Bridge was Britten's mentor, and he retained a considerable affection for the older man's attempt to blend a particular sort of continental rigour with a British pastoral flavour; this performance of the Phantasie Quartet conveys both its intellectual power and its sheer charm. --Roz Kaveney
