This addition to the Chandos William Alwyn edition begins with four world premieres and concludes with the Fantasy-Waltzes (1956-57). Night Thoughts (1939) encapsulates the foreboding Alwyn felt early in WWII while on fire-watching patrol. The Sonata alla toccata comes from the end of the war and concludes in exhilarating celebration written, as the composer said, "for sheer enjoyment". A dark sibling to the romantic beauty of Lyra Angelica (1954), Movements for Piano (1961) is a 15-minute journey from night to day, a psychological voyage towards redemption.

Alwyn noted, "The urge to write a virtuoso suite of piano pieces came to me after a visit to Grieg's lakeside home in Norway". Those who know the composer's orchestral work will find the Fantasy Waltzes equally adventurous in melodic atmospherics. The 11 pieces begin in nostalgia, evoke a glittering kaleidoscope of moods, visit mysterious landscapes, and end with a dazzling swirl. Julian Milford is particularly fine at realising the ambiguous watercolourings of Alwyn's music, and he also finds the quixotic humour that sometimes bursts forth like a ray of English sunshine. --Gary S Dalkin
