Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Staedtizism is the fifth release on the Berlin-based Scape label which is owned by Steffan Betke--Germany's uber minimalist dubmeister who records dub-influenced electronica under the alias of Pole. Staedtizism is a made-up metaphor derived from the German term "Stadt"(city). This is a soundtrack for an urban state of mind that features a global cast of sonic wizards including Kit Clayton from San Francisco, Trash Aesthetic from Los Angeles and the cream of Europe's experimental electronic artists like To Rococo Rot, Sun Electric and the legendary Thomas Fehlmann, amongst others. "Hard Drive Dub" by Cologne's Burnt Friedman and The Nu Dub Players and Pole's own "Sactesachute" are based on personal interpretations of electronic dub inspired by the sounds, noises and atmospheres of a bustling metropolis. The contributors' influences range from electronica and neo-classical through to jazz, post-rock and techno, these sounds are moulded into compelling post-digital dub tracks that are rooted very much in the present. But at the same time, they also manage to evoke the warmth, soul and spirit of old Studio 1 dub reggae without sounding soul-less and digitised.--Terna Heuston-Jibo

CD Description

STAEDTIZISM is ~scape label coordinator Stefan Betke's statement on the digital dub phenomenon. It's an album-length meditation on this urban sound whose rhythms and lines are reflected in the music's asymmetric designs. The musicians featured here have adopted the characteristics of classic dub without relinquishing their techno-centric metropolitan mindset. Alongside ~scape regulars Kit Clayton and Burnt Friedman & the Nu Dub Players, To Rococo Rot & I-Sound, the Modernist, and Orb associate Thomas Fehlmann revel in the possibilities of "Hard Drive Dub", reworking techno on a software-driven lathe of dub deconstruction.
Stellar contributions fromVladislav Delay, Trash Aesthetic, and Pole (Betke himself) are saturated in echo, delay, and crackling digital FX, representing a refined response to the raw, hands-on deck technique of the original Jamaican studio scientists. Gramm's "Siemens.Bioport (Live Edit)", a skyscraping mirage of city lights swimming in midmorning haze, and Sun Electric's elaboratemirror-maze of glints and glitches are particular standoutsamong STAEDTIZISM's stylish, seamless selections.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those that want music to be a space to exist in, 26 Oct 2000
Music should sometimes reflect experience and coexist within our urban life. This cd fulfils this need with zen-like tranquillity, with time streched bass loops, hollow metalic echoes and distant clatering. So bannish stress, stand at the window and listen to the melancholy sound. Enjoy.
