Amazon.co.uk Review

This has the unmistakeable whiff of opportunism about it-there is no structure, no narration, nothing by way of accompanying information, and much of the concert footage looks like it was filmed by someone whose other eye was engaged reading the instruction manual for the camera. Despite--or, just maybe, because of--these limitations, it offers some genuine revelations of its subject. And, in fairness, the concert footage that is filmed properly is marvellous.

The material collected here was apparently filmed in America in the late 60s, and offers a series of snapshots of Cash on one of his famously interminable tours. He is shown playing to audiences of fans, maximum security prisoners and feather-clad Native American dignitaries, and he is shown away from the stage, playing cards on the tour bus, jamming with friends and further reinforcing his then-unfashionable interest in Native American issues with a visit to the site of the Wounded Knee massacre. Also of interest are the other performers that wander through this random travelogue: Cash's wife, June Carter Cash, duetting with him on "Jackson"; Cash's lead guitarist, Carl Perkins, taking the spotlight to sing his creation "Blue Suede Shoes"; and, best of all, Cash, grinning from ear to ear and quite unabashedly overawed, recording a glorious duet of Billy Edd Wheeler's "Blistered" with an insouciant, gum-chewing Bob Dylan. --Andrew Mueller

5.0 out of 5 stars This is Johnny Cash, 27 Mar 2006
Don't allow quibbles about sound quality or dodgy camera work put you off buying this DVD. There simply is no other documentary in existence that captures Johnny Cash, the man. None other than Rolling Stone magazine called this documentary as important for understanding Johnny Cash as 'Don't Look Back' is for Bob Dylan and 'Gimme Shelter' is for the Rolling Stones (and, I would add, "This is Elvis" for Elvis Presley).

One of the first scenes depicts Cash shooting a crow then, finding it only wounded, cradling it while singing an improvised ditty ("If I could fly like Mister Crow, I know where I would go, I would leave you, I would leave you..."). There, in a nutshell, is the contradiction of the Man in Black, the kind of man who would get the sudden notion "Let's shoot a crow" then spend the next several days trying to nurse it back to health.

Shot between mid-1968 and early 1969, this film captures Cash at a pivotal moment in his life and career, having just released the iconic "At Folsom Prison" album, marrying his longtime love June Carter, playing the classic concert at San Quentin and getting ready to embark on his new "Johnny Cash Show" on the ABC television network. We see him in studio duets with the likes of Carl Perkins and Bob Dylan, in stage performances and prison concerts (including the only filmed concert performance I've ever seen of Johnny and June dueting on "Jackson", their signature song), revisiting his delapidated childhood home in Dyess, Arkansas, singing for Native Americans at Wounded Knee and messing around on long tour bus rides with bandmates and new wife June Carter Cash.

This film, despite not being as polished as it could be, or maybe because of that, is a real "fly on the wall" revelation of its subject and essential viewing for anyone interested in learning more about Johnny Cash. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I disagree with your official review, 15 Oct 2003
What a load of cobblers. The lack of narration lets the film breathe. It is full of superb moments, and the man's character really shines through the whole thing.

I bought it despite the Amazon review, and urge any Cash fan to do the same.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Best Film About Cash To Date, 24 Jun 2006

Forget the Biopic, sidestep Sanctuary's DVD 'The Man In Black' and order this immediately if you are interested, inquisitive or appreciative of Johnny Cash. Filmed at a pivotal moment in his career when he had just married June Carter the material from archives is well assembled to give an indispensable guide to Johnny Cash the man - with plenty of his music and a great deal of his background sketched in as he revisits old haunts and looks up family and friends.
