Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
There are some modest gems on this unobtrusive little disc from ASV. Gavin Sutherland conducts the Royal Ballet Sinfonia in nine short works by British composers born in the first half of the 20th century. The music is skilfully crafted. Three of the items set out to preserve the nation's heritage. Philip Lane's Cotswold Dances, Raymond Warren's Wexford Bells and Adrian Cruft's Traditional Hornpipes each contain memories of how we used to be. It changes the colour of life to carry such merry and sometimes poignant tunes around in one's head. Yet there is no lack of originality. Sir Malcolm Arnold's Little Suite is borne of a fertile imagination; the flowing siciliano slow movement carries a long and lovely melody. The music is not always comforting. Arthur Butterworth's The Path Across the Moors has sinister undercurrents. William Blezard's The River features a plaintive cor anglais over a threatening drum-beat. Two numbers are witty. Paul Lewis' An English Overture knits together numerous drinking songs with deliberate beery incoherence. Eric Fenby's Rossini on Ilkla Moor marries Yorkshire homeliness with Italian opera and achieves an amusingly plausible hybrid. What a musical nation this is! --Rick Jones
