5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishingly, surprisingly, unexpectedly excellent, 5 July 2008
i saw this movie on TV last night and found it to be a superb thriller, excellently acted by Demi Moore (which was a complete surprise) to the point that I would say it's one of the best acting performances of any actor I've seen, full stop.Bruce Willis was not so great, but his part was minimal. I thought this was on a par with some of the great noir thrillers of the 40s, and was in no way inferior. The plot was intricate and extremely intelligent and I can't understand how in nearly 20 years I've never even heard of this movie, let alone seen it before. I was absolutely gripped, which seldom happens when I watch any film. Some of the cinematography was quite inspired, too, again referencing earlier 'golden age' movies of the 40s and 50s. A subtle masterpiece, in my regard.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn`t your mummy ever tell you not to lie?, 16 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Here`s a rare Demi `n` Bruce film that many of you may have never heard of, or forgotten about - it was first released back in 1991, and recieved a mediocre response at the box-office. So why release it on DVD? Well, there must be Bruce and Demi fans out there that need to complete their collection - that`s the only possible reason! Told in a series of flashbacks, it`s a tale of death, cover-up and downright lies as Cynthia Kellogg(Moore) attempts to cover for her friend, whose abusive husband(Willis) has met an untimely end. Sadly, not even Bruce`s hilarious facial hair can save this film - as the story unfolds, the snail-pace speed and complete waste of Keitel as the investigating cop means that you just don`t care what happens to these people. There are no worthwile extras attached to this elderly movie. Don`t waste your money.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, 1 Mar 2004
By A Customer
Set in New Jersey, this is about the murder of James Urbanski (played by Willis) and tells of the tempestuous marriage between the dead man and his wife Joyce(Headly) through a series of flashbacks, which lead up to the murder.
The story is told from the point of view of Cynthia Kellogg (Moore)who is being interviewed by policeman Harvet Kietel since she is Joyce's (or Joycie as Willis calls her in a very broad New Jersey accent) childhood friend. It is this close bond that keeps Cynthia in contact with Joyce inspite of her marriage to the overbearing James. She finds their relationship very difficult to deal with at times and feels caught in the middle, even having to intercept an attempt on James' life by Joyce.
The way Cynthia tells it there is little doubt Joyce killed her husband, but when Joyce tells a different story, the police don't know who to believe and have to rely on braking the killer down to obtain a confession. The story gets all the more complex when there's another killing...
Maybe this film is more in the vein of a tv movie but it is skillfully executed and the performances from all are very good.
I found it very compelling and it keeps you guessing to the end.
