Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Perhaps the mark of a truly great performance is its ability to resist the fashions of an age. These Bach cantatas could be described as "old fashioned" in their steadiness of speed, the timbre of the singers and instrumentalists, and so on; but just sample the opening movement of cantata no. 151 and you'll find a quality almost always absent from modern performances: tenderness. Britten loves this music, and he's not ashamed to show it. So do his singers and instrumentalists. And if Heather Harper is a bit swoony, a bit smooth by today's standards, who cares? After all, she's singing about comfort and rejoicing. Peter Pears also puts in a brief but memorably intense appearance in the same work. And the final chorale is sung with a wholehearted, congregational verve that Bach would surely have been pleased to receive in his Leipzig church. No. 102, with Baker, Pears and Fischer-Dieskau, also offers opportunities for some superlative instrumental playing from solo oboe and flute. The disc is rounded out with Celebrate this Festival, and there is undoubtedly much to celebrate, with Britten's empathy for Purcell second to none. A superb disc, in decent sound. Unless you're irredeemably addicted to period instruments, buy this, and get a glimpse of true musical greatness. --Harriet Smith
