Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

"Disco Science", his toweringly provocative debut single, demonstrated that Parisian producer, Mirwais' disco roots are evident but also distorted and twisted out of all recognition by wild pitch-shifting and taste for acid bassline. Production only emphasises this by taking some of the most popular sounds from late Seventies and early 80s dance floors--Moroder beats, vocoders, analogue synth sounds-- and wilfully hammering them into fresh shapes on numbers such as "Naive Song" and "Junkie's Prayer". Mirwais' skills brought him to the attention of Madonna who sequestered them for her album, and returns the favour with this album's centrepiece number, "Paradise Not For Me". This exquisite blend of French monologue and treated English vocal married to swelling synths indicates why Mirwais was seen as the hottest, most chic French electronic producer from an apparently endless line of talent that continues to emanate from the city. Elsewhere Mirwais offers a nod to his compatriots on "I Can't Wait" which matches a pulverising stop start Daft Punk rhythm to buzz saw bleeps and also New York on "Definitive Beat", a juddering breakbeat layered with skidding turntable scratches. A devastatingly original album from a true pioneer. --Mike Pattenden

4.0 out of 5 stars French Bliss, 24 April 2001
By A Customer
Okay, he's been around for a while but this is the first major 'production' that he's blessed us with and it works pretty well. Music has been rather dull in 2001: manufactured pop music marketing continues to reach new heights whilst tacky nu metal ® is regarded as the new grunge which is unfortunate because old grunge never really happened. That's why the glittery and cosmopolitan sounds of Mirwaiz are a breath of fresh air in this stock cupboard of suffocating pop.

The album opens with 'Disco Science', which can be found in 'Snatch', the fairly amusing follow up to 'Lock Stock'. Put simply, it's the most acidic and brain frazzling track since 'Higher State of Consciousness' and it rocks splendidly. Other highlights include the very French sounding but groovy little ditty 'Naïve Song' and there are enough computerised vocals sprinkled across the album to make a 12" cheesy pizza delight. There are also elements of Big Beat here although the collaboration with Madonna doesn't really quite come off. You get the feeling that Madonna, like a mother at a teenage party, is trying desperately hard to remain hip but kinda fails. No disrespect to Madonna, but French mirrorball disco doesn't suit any forty-year-old mother of two, no matter how many musical transformations you have gone through.

It's not a groundbreaking album like Air or Mezzanine but it's pretty funky and extremely catchy at times. If there is only so much of the Dream Team's selection you can force yourself to like, then give this album ago. Besides, it'll look remarkably cool in your record collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW what an album... MADONNA KNOWS HER STUFF !!!!, 2 Dec 2000
By A Customer
I first came across MIRWAIS when i heard his production on MADONNA"S "MUSIC", and from the first moment i heard her cd i was hooked. It has some of the most boppable, hard to stay still beats i have ever came across.

The Album is excellent from start to finish, its wonky, dreamy beats are remenisent of that of DAFT PUNK and AIR both of which are a big influence on the dance scene at the moment. Madonna certainly knows how to find something so refreshing different and it shows here on PRODUCTION. The most stand out tracks are "NIEVE SONG", "PARADISE (NOT FOR ME) which features the musicwoman herself, and lastly not but leastly "DISCO SCIENCE". If you are looking for something entirely different and still feel like you want to dance then this is the best album to try !!!! I guarantee MIRWAIS will make a big impression on the dance scene in the year Y2K.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Paradise IS for me!, 21 Nov 2000
This is one of those CDs that you buy with a pinch of salt; you hope to like it but don't know much about it. Well, you won't be disappointed. Although Mirwais stays on the same electronic road for most of the 11 tunes, they are all equally moody and appealing. From the 70s-esque 'Disco Science' to the Fatboy Slim-y 'Definitive Beat', there is something for everyone. Mirwais dabbles between acoustic blues to the Big Beats of 'Cant Wait' and the theme is most definately French but shows more depth in style and quality than his fellow Frogs, Daft Punk or Air. He manages to balance elements of both trance and tension in my favourite track 'Paradise(Not For Me)' which features some old dear called Madonna or something. This is probably the totem-song of the whole album but it's brilliance doesn't necessarily throw the others into shadow. Anyway, take the plunge and order this CD. It's not something thats continously appealing, or even consistently good(steer clear of tracks 3 and 5), but is great to either chill down to or just funk away to. Play that funky music French boy!
