Words like "very pretty" and "attractive" spring to mind when listening to Howard Goodall's We are the Burning Fire. Faint praise maybe, but there will be shed-loads of people who will love this. Folk songs collected from around the world have been very imaginatively orchestrated and arranged, all performed with tremendous élan by forces among which the choir of Christ Church Cathedral Oxford features most prominently. But whether we want "élan" when listening to earthy songs from Lesotho, Poland, Brazil and the like is another matter.

Goodall is, of course, a hugely able musician and certain tracks--such as the highly atmospheric "Blow the wind southerly"--suit the forces down to the ground. But this compares rather unfavourably with the lame broken-voice solos in "Adieu la Belle" from France and other treble solos in more potentially rollicking numbers. Spit and sawdust folk music this is not, but as an example of an attractive crossover it should find its market. --Stewart Collins
