5.0 out of 5 stars Funky euphoria? Don't get much of that round here these days, 28 Jul 2004
By G. Pye "eartrumpet" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There have been plenty of excellent introductory Northern soul albums which tentatives can cut their teeth on, but sooner or later you have to get down and dirty with collections aimed directly at the party crowd. "Grooving at the Go-Go" is one hell of a fine collection of greatly known and not so known, but jealously loved Northern soul favourites, assembled with the mininum of concession to digital technology. These are straight warts and all transfers, engineered with balance, volume and atmosphere in mind rather than sonic accuracy which characterises the Motown Connossieur releases of late, (how many re-mixes of "Do I Love You" can there possibly be lurking in the 'Vault'?) On "Grooving..", the title track by the 4 Larks, Darrell Banks's anthemic "Open the door..", Edwin Starr's "You're my mellow" throb energetically next to proto-funk Parliaments "I wanna testify" and mimimalist R&B "Cracked up over you" by Lee Rogers with skillfully judged ease. Plus Jackie Lee, Bob Relf, Bobby Garrett, (a University Challenge question in the making here surely), the Olympics (yes!), Eddie Holman and Rose Batiste on one slim self-effacingly compiled album which, if Amazon are to be believed is no longer in print, becomes the kind of collection that appears all too short in duration. So you play it again and marvel at how the hours have slipped you by unnoticed in your funky state of euphoria. Yes I quite liked this one.
