Amazon.co.uk Review
Lamberto Bava, son of the Italian horror legend and giallo godfather Mario Bava, teamed up with modern master Dario Argent (co-writer and producer) for this slick gorefest, a triumph of style and special effects over movie logic. Set in a refurbished German movie palace, our hapless soon-to-be victims arrive for a sneak preview of a horror movie only to see the gore unfold in the audience, as well as onscreen. While the exposition remains murky, one patron finds that an infected cut leads to a gooey transformation, and every one of her victims follows suit until the snaggle-toothed monsters outnumber the humans. The survivors, trapped in the tomb of a cinema, must fend off attacks à la George Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Borrowing liberally from films such as Dawn of the Dead and The Tingler, Demons also anticipates Scream in its cinema-savvy references, not to mention its undeniably Neve Campbell-ish heroine. The blaring heavy-metal-hard-rock soundtrack and the carnival horror-house atmosphere helps remind us that this is all just stupid fun. Despite the overwhelming body count, excessive gore and rivers of green demon pus, the cartoonishly grotesque killings avoid the sadistic edge of many Italian horror films. By the climax of the film the premise is long forgotten in a ghoul apocalypse, but who's watching this for the story anyway? --Sean Axmaker, Amazon.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic 80's horror, 15 April 2005
By A Customer
Cheesy acting, 80's fashion, poor dubbing, mysogonistic overtones, and crap special effects - not the best ingredients for a horror classic?

I remember watching "Demons" as a young lad and seemed to remember it scaring me to death - in a good way.
However, revisiting it as a 'grown up' I enjoyed it for entirely different reasons. I am surprised no-one has mentioned the highly camp overtones of this film - Like The Rocky Horror Picture Show on acid, but instead of "The Timewarp" we get Go West's classic synth rock "We close our Eyes" (Thank Christ!)

All in all a thouroughly and hilariously enjoyable waste of 2 hours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, 23 Oct 2005
By A Customer
I can only think that reviewers who gave this film less than full marks haven't seen it enough times. I've seen it lots.

The plot is daft, the acting is questionable, the special effects are cheap and the soundtrack is out of place. It all holds together just brilliantly. There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments (unintentional) and plenty of moments to make you turn away from the violence and gore.

If you want some stupid, gory, funny, fast paced, overdubbed, classic horror, this is a film for you.

A recent release added several seconds of previously cut scenes, by the way, so it's worth buying to replace your old VHS copy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gore, pus, rock and sleazy looking European women!, 20 Jun 2002
Demons is cited on the commentary that accompanies this DVD as being one of the most important Italian horror films of the 80's, and indeed it is. Bypassing (partially) the flabby, overcooked acting, unevenly distributed action and horrendous scores of many a Euro-horror, Demons goes straight for the jugular, eyeballs, guts and groin tipping it's hat fairly and squarely to the work of George Romero (Night of the Living Dead) and Sam Raimi (the Evil Dead). This film is certainly one of the best paced non-American horror flicks of the decade and contains a level of lovingly crafted, sickeningly visceral gore which just wouldn't happen these days.
I shan't give away much of the 'plot', which has more more holes in it than a machine gunned Swiss cheese, but suffice to say a bunch of sleazy looking European types (I have a major thing for the second prostitute who gets it!) from all walks of life end up holed up in an ominous Cinema being preyed upon by the 'zombie substitute' demons. The gore is plentiful and as I mentioned sick. Just check out the first transformation, the teeth being knocked out to make way for fangs, the grotesque through the back 'birthing' and the eye gouging.
For a European film the acting isn't actually too bad and the set is very effective. This film of course has bad points. Loads of them, but as is sometimes the case with these trashy horrors, the bad bits are so bad that they end up enhancing the enjoyment of the picture as you laugh at them. In this particular picture I refer to the outrageous pimp, the hammy usherette, the totally stupid coke snorting punks (snorting coke out of a coke can!) and best of all the continuity disregarding finale that shows the entire country overrun with Demons some 2-3 hours after the inital encounter! As one of the last survivors saviours remarks: 'Perhaps we can't find somewhere where we can start again.' Classic garbage and even the involvement of the terminally abysmal Dario Argento couldn't ruin the fun of this film. Add to this toxic cocktail an interesting commentary with the director and a soundtrack featuring Billy Idol, Saxon and the immensely underrated 'Fast as a Shark' by Accept and you have a total winner. I love it.
