Slick to a fault, this glossy action flick takes place in sunny Florida, where Martin Lawrence and Will Smith play two cops--one married with kids, the other a swinging bachelor. The two are forced to trade places to foil criminal mastermind Fouchet (Tchéky Karyo) who has stolen $100 million worth of heroin from a police lockup. Violent, illogical and filled with wall-to-wall profanity, Bad Boys was the last film produced by the hit-making team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer before Simpson's untimely death and marked the directorial debut of Michael Bay who followed up with The Rock. Bad Boys will be of interest to action buffs and fans of Téa Leoni, who makes one of her early screen appearances in the central supporting role. --Jeff Shannon

I'm a big fan of action films, with cop movies topping the bill. Having read the other reviews here I had high hopes for this film - I ignored the occasional negative review reasoning that any film with Will Smith in it can't be that bad. How wrong I was!

The cinematography is lush and colourful, helped significantly by the Miami backdrop. And that is about as far as my compliments can reach I'm afraid - the film rapidly falls apart from the first moment the characters open their mouths.

The script here is utterly dreadful! Whilst similar untaxing commercial offerings such as the likes of Lethal Weapon or Die Hard give you witty and slick lines, Bad Boys instead resorts to perpetual bickering between the protagonists. It soon becomes tiresome and headache inducing. If I want a two hour bickering match I'll insult my mother in law - I really don't want to pay for the privilage thank you very much.

Worse, the contrived plot lines are just farcical. The basic plot premise is fine - the heist of drugs from a police impound - but the leaden, childish and forced attempt at both script and d'enouement does a great job of killing any potential the initial pitch may have had long before this turkey was actually hatched. A good script flows effortlessly and with finesse, twisting unexpectedly on its elegant and enjoyable path. This no-brainer stubbornly plods around like a doped teen with an asbo. It might be wearing a bit of bling on the outside, but under the hoodie it's sullen and ugly.

Back in the days when I was 12 years old I might just have enjoyed the ridiculous identity swap comedy antics routine, mugging to camera, constant yelling and agro, over-acting and ham fisted attempts at a buddie cop movie. Now though I'm a little more discerning. Basically this is one of the least enjoyable cop films I've ever encountered.

If you want a good knockabout cop movie watch any of the Die Hard or Lethal Weapon series. For something more serious but retaining the Miami glitz see Miami Vice. Someone To Watch Over Me is stylish too if you'd like to read my review. Or for a truly great - and I mean World beating - cop show experience try The Shield or The Wire.

As for this turkey - stuff it!

This film is awesome and very funny! From the director Michael Bay also known as GOD!

The fact that it is now in a 'Superbit' version makes it even better. I prefer watching it with DTS on a surround sound system. It sounds awesome and the picture can be zoomed in without distorting. Great for projectors!!!

In my opinion this is one of the best action comedy films of the last decade, where some fade It still has longevity. I've watched this film on VHS format several times and still find it entertaining. This is owed to the comic genius of both Martin Lawrence & Will Smith who turn in great performances, even in the straight scenes. This is well balanced by the action which ensues from the beginning to the climatic end. The two play streetwise cops who will do virtually anything to get the job done. Consequently their innate abilities are required to crack a big case & catch it's cold blooded perpetrator, who as a result of his daring heist has potentially embarrassed their precinct. The tension is further built when the chase becomes even more personal to our good guys (bad boys). A must see for fans of the main stars and even if you're not ... you won't be disappointed.
