Product Description

Product Description

Perdita (Rosie Perez) and Romeo (Javier Bardem) are two lovers well-matched in temperament; Romeo is a master of bloody Voodoo rituals, Perdita is willing to cast her own spell on anyone for her personal gain. Not content with ferrying an illicit cargo of foetuses from Mexico to Las Vegas on behalf of the Mafia, the pair also kidnap an innocent young couple en route. Earmarking one of their hostages for the starring role in one of their bizarre sacrificial ceremonies, Romeo and Perdita remain unaware that life on the edge could be about to catch up with them. The character of Perdita crops up in David Lynch's 'Wild at Heart', also based on stories by Barry Gifford.

Barry Gifford, the man behind David Lynch's classic's WILD AT HEART and LOST HIGHWAY has had his book '59 & Raining' adapted by the likes of Alex Cox and a whole bunch of other crazy Mexicans into one of the stangest and coolest film in a while. Rozie Perez is Perdita the grifter who embarks on the kind of sex and violence odessey depicted in Wild at Heart. But this time Nic Cage is replaced by Javier Bardem as Romeo the black magic outlaw that every one fears. On a mission, and sexual kink, to sacrafic a virgin in a grand ceremony the two lover become involved in kidnap, murder, baby smuggling and all the usual wierdness that you would expect from Gifford. However, the look of the film is far closer to the likes of Alex Cox's HIGHWAY PATROLMAN than the stylised look of Lynch. It also lacks the sense of humour and illogical symbolism deployed in WILD AT HEART (ie; no wicked witch or yellow brick road). But do not be put off! This is a great film for repeated viewing, and what might seem odd to begin with soon takes on inspiration. Children should not watch this film, nor should anyone who is easily upset by human sacrifice and black magic - the rest of you will have a crazy journey with Perdita Durango.
NB;Perdita Durango is the character played by Isabelle Roselini in Wild at Heart?

This is a great movie, but not for everyones nerves. When i watched it for the first time i was shocked. Extreme violance. On otherhand the story is great. The Spanish original version is 136 minutes long. German and US version 126 minutes. UK version, well, 96minutes!!!!!!!!! So beware. Amozon offers also a US version which is goold half and hour longer!

What a journey! this film never stops you wondering where it is going to go next. From devil worship, abduction, and human sacrific to transporting human baby fetusi across the Mexican border. A foot to the floor black comedy with great cameos from Alex Cox and James Gandolfini (Sopranos). Just when you thought films were predictable you saw this.

THE MOVIE

Perdita Durango (Rosie Perez), a prositute, and Romeo Dolorosa (Javier Bardem), a voodoo priest, meet at the US - Mexican border after he just robbed a bank and ripped off his partner.
Perdita and Romeo team up as lovers and partners. They abduct a teen couple in Mexico to sacrifice them. Before that they terrorize the couple and rape them both at gunpoint.
Along the way they steal a truckload of aborted human fetuses (shown in detail) and are hunted by DEA agent Woody Dumas (James Gandolfini). They also run into Romeo's old partner from the bank heist who is out for revenge.

A truly bizarre gangster movie filled with dark humor, extreme violence, weird voodoo rituals, rape scenes of teenagers and a very distrubing atmosphere. It was heavily cut for an R rating in the US prior to its Unrated release, it was cut by the BBFC until its 2006 re-rating and the uncut version was refused a classification in Australia and hasn't seen an uncut release there ever.
It sounds like something that Quentin Tarantino could have made, but in my opinion, DANCE WITH THE DEVIL aka PERDITA DURANGO is far better than any movie Tarantino made.
PERDITA DURANGO is based on Barry Gifford's novel "59° and Raining: The Story of Perdita Durango" as was David Lynch's 1990 movie WILD AT HEART with Nicolas Cage.
An excellent cast in some of their best performances, especially Rosie Perez as Perdita and Javier Bardem as Romeo who are just perfect in their roles.
Aimee Graham and Harley Cross as the two abducted teenagers also give believable performances. James Gandolfini stars as a DEA officer in pursuit of Romeo in one of his best roles ever.

Bought this after seeing an old trailer. It's a must see for fans of Mexploitation movies and it's a clear influence on Machete, Planet Terror and Deathproof. Great movie if not just a little bit tatty round the edges and a great early show from javier Bardem.
