Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Love it or hate it, every Spring in Europe brings the extravagance known as the Eurovision Song Contest. This Swedish Import CD includes all the winning songs from the contest's conception in 1956 until 1999. Unlike the British-produced Eurovision compilations, this release isn't an anthology of the numerous UK failures (no Clodagh Rodgers, or Sonia here); instead Eurovision 1956/1999 is 100 per cent European, with the winning songs often sung in the artist's native tongues. For instance, the original Hebrew vocal version of the dazzling "Diva" by 1998 winner Dana International is included. The rarities are also here, such as the disco-camp classic "La det swinge" ("Let It Swing") by Bobby Socks (the Norwegian winning entry from 1985), but don't get too excited--it's not the 'hard-to-find' English version. The good, the bad and the mind-numbingly awful are included on this release, but that's what makes the Eurovision Song Contest great. --John Galilee

4.0 out of 5 stars A taste of eurovision history at its best, 23 Jul 2002
As a specialist CD it is certainly as good as anything I've ever heard. It has all the winners, most of them in their native tounges, with the exception of the 1957 winner, one of the 1969 winners and the 1983 winner. As a piece of history it also works as it gives us a good idea of how music has changed over the past five decades, from the typical crooner singing style made popular in the 40's and 50's to the more experimental sounds of today. What surprised me was that, especially on CD one, the more popular songs such as Abba's Waterloo, Milk And Honey's Hallelujah and Izhar Cohen and Alphabeta's A-ba-ni-bi was performed in English. Thank you to the people who decided that. It may help that some of the other songs could be released in English so that we can better appreciate the song. I know there are some out there, for example Nicole's Ein Bisschen Frieden, which was released as A Little Peace. I know because I've played it on my Hospital Radio show. The inclusion of the three bonus tracks especially Baccara's Parlez-Vous Francais was a good idea and well worth pursuing in any future releases.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Eurovision Fun!!!, 3 May 2002
By A Customer
I think that this is one of the best Eurovison compilations money can buy. It got me through my finals!!!

You cannot fault it. It's got all the winners, bar two from 1969, and the 1983 winner from Luxemburg (thought you ain't mising much here). But it has all the other winners in original language versions, which is a great deal of fun!

Listening to this CD makes you understnad why some entries won (and deprived the UK). Other entries you will just "marvel" at. How did they manage to get one point, let alone win the contest...?

The first CD (with winners from 1977) is better, as it carries more modern winners, including the classic from Riva in 1989, "Rock Me!" However it would have been nice to include some more British entries including Sweet Dreams from 1983, as a bonus... rather than "Congratulations!!!"

Overall an excellent, must have CD for any true Eurovision fan!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but not completely together!, 18 Mar 2001
Eurovision heaven without a doubt. But why no 1983 winner - Luxembourg's Corinne Hermes (Si la vie et un cadeau)? Surely one the best know Eurovision ballads? If you're going to do a compilation, do it right!
