Amazon.co.uk Review

When the Ramones left the confines of CBGB's in 1976--where they had developed their earmark three-chord speed delivery--and took the show on the road to England, they set the punk-rock juggernaut rolling. It can't be stressed enough how influential these boys from Forest Hills, Queens, were on Britain's emerging punk-rock scene, but a few seconds into It's Alive and it's easy to tell why. It's Alive captures the phenomenon of the Ramones at their peak and in their element: live and sweaty.

The first half-dozen songs race by in the blink of an eye. "Rockaway Beach", "Teenage Lobotomy", "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "I Wanna Be Well" practically melt together in a three-chord melange, Tommy never letting up on the frantic beat and Joey pausing barely long enough to breathlessly shout, "One two three four!" before launching into the next set. Twenty-eight songs clock in under 48 minutes--talk about a land-speed record. No subtleties of production or tweaking are needed here to capture the Ramones' live sound. Plug them in, turn everything up to 10 and let it rip It's Alive is not just the best Ramones album, it is easily the best live punk-rock album of all time and perhaps one of the best live albums ever recorded. --Tod Nelson

CD Description

This is the Holy Grail of live concert recordings. Long unavailable in the U.S., IT'S ALIVE captures the Ramones in peak form, having the time of their lives before an appreciative British audience. From Joey's slow drawl "Weeeeeeellllll, it's great to be back here in."..) to Dee Dee's "1-2-3-4", this disc pummels the listener into submission with the complete live Ramones experience to the point where you can practically feel the sweat. All the classics from the first threealbums are executed with an enthusiasm the Ramones rarely mustered years down the line.
The live version of "Blitzkrieg Bop" will send shivers down even the hardiest Coney Island strongman's spine, and "We're a Happy Family", "Teenage Lobotomy", and "Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World" express what it is to be young and dumb better than a thousand John Hughes films ever could. IT'S ALIVE is the next best thing to actually seeing the Ramones live and, as that's not likelyto happen, this set will go a long way towards satisfying your Ramones fix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now can it have 5 stars?? I think so!!!, 17 Sep 2007
Here's the track listing for the DVD...

Admittedly there's a large chunk of the New Years Eve Rainbow show (It's Alive) omitted but that is because when the master tapes were found, after being presumed lost for nearly 30 years, some of the show was missing. Also, the soundtrack of this film footage was missing so Tommy Ramone has spent the last two years matching up the original audio recordings to the film... And apparently that's not as easy as it might sound. I think that the album recording has overdubs and some of the songs on the album are taken from other shows during the same tour, so it didn't match up with the film footage!

5.0 out of 5 stars 1000 stars, 30 Jul 2003
This review is from: It's Alive (Audio CD)
I dare anyone out there to find a better live album than this. Without question this is pure 100% quality.
You don't get any of that idle crowd chat on this album as soon as you have soaked in one track, boom!!, your into another.
No time for a quick beer or something to eat or the loo when this is on.
I suggest you set the cd player to repeat, sit in your favourite chair, crank up the volume and let the music blow you away.

Don't think about buying it just buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars QUALITY AND QUANTITY, 10 Jan 2002
By garypayne@blueyonder.co.uk (South Shields, U.K.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's Alive (Audio CD)
As an old school punk, one of the albums that still stands out to this day is this one.28 songs of such high quality that suck you in from the opening chords of "rockaway beach" and spits you out three quarters of an hour later with "we're a happy family".Along the way, we are treated to possibly the finest Ramones album to date, comprising all the classics, such as "Sheena", "pinhead", "commando","today your love, tomorrow the world" and "oh oh i love her so".Quality wise, quantity wise and content wise, it doesnt come any better than this. A must buy for anyone thinking of getting into the Ramones.Joey will be looking down on us all, proud to have left something so good. R.I.P.
