Jean-Yves Thibaudet is not a pianist to be pigeon-holed. Alongside the recordings of his fellow countrymen Debussy and Ravel, he has also recorded a tribute to the jazz giant, Conversations with Bill Evans, and plays on the soundtrack of the film Portrait of a Lady. Perhaps this catholic approach accounts for the freshness of his Debussy playing. Nor for him the "stick the pedal down and make an impressionistic wash of sound" approach. His playing is clean and refreshing without losing any of the voluptuous sensuality of Debussy at his most beguiling. I challenge anyone to try "Reflets dans l'eau" which opens this set without feeling the stress ebb away.

There are lollipops to be found among the extensive repertory on these two discs, including the celebrated "Clair de Lune" from the Suite Bergamasque and the "Golliwogg's Cake-Walk" from Children's Corner. The mainstay of the release is the two sets of Images and the two books of Etudes, 12 studies whose demands are not for the faint-hearted. Luckily that excludes Thibaudet, who offers virtuosic and thoughtful performances of pieces which while written to help develop pianists' technique stand up magnificently as music to be listened to. --Keith Clarke

The Penguin Guide to CDs and DVDs has Thibaudet's sets of the complete Debussy solo piano music at the top of the digital recordings, and this is certainly high quality.

We have several recordings of the Preludes and some other works, but there is nothing to come close to Thibaudet for great performances and superior recording quality.

The liner notes are very helpful, and in the first set you get different articles in English, French, German and Italian. Great if you are multilingual, but only of marginal interest to me. The second set has one article and translations, not separate articles.

Well worth purchasing.

I've owned and loved Vol I of Thibaudet's Debussy complete piano for some years but for various reasons have held back on acquiring it's complement. Somewhat to do with the fact that I have other versions of most of the works on these discs that I have great affection for, and somehow did not want to risk being disappointed.

Anyway, it arrived this morning, and just putting it on was like having a shot of morphine (as I can attest after a badly broken bone). Within seconds there was a hot bubbly sensation rising in my chest and my eyes rose up in their sockets as I was carried off on a carpet of golden clouds. Debussy is so direct, and more so it would seem as his career progressed, for whilst I love the works on Vol I, I have no recollection of any of them hitting me quite like this. Thibaudet, the instrument, the recording and the acoustic all conspiring to produce perfection.

My real concern was for Thibaudet's interpretation of the Etudes. For a long while I had a set of these as performed by Georges Pludermacher on vinyl, and these were among my most treasured music. Unfortunately, I let go of my vinyl and have not been able to find these on CD. I had such pleasure from them that they became definitive. I later acquired a set by Mitsuko Uchida, and althouh there was nothing really wrong with them, they were just so different as to seem wrong. After first listening of Thibaudet's it's apparent that these too are not the same, but after hearing all that preceded them in the box set I was sufficiently receptive to flow with them and enjoy them for what they were. Anyway, time will tell if they fill the void left by the Pludermacher's. What is clear that all the other works in the set are ravishing and I'm about to go spin them for a second time today.

There's no question Thibaudet knows how to play Debussy, but what's up with the lousy miking of the piano? Most often it sounds as though it's being recorded through a thin wall: there's a lack of brightness and clarity in the high register which is kind of off-putting if, like me, you like your Debussy 'with the mist burned off' with every note clear and well-defined.

Still, the playing is excellent, hence the 4 stars.
