Stravinsky's miniatures are chamber music in the classical or baroque sense: small-scale works where the musicians play to each other. So the conductorless Orpheus Chamber Orchestra is ideally placed to bring out the intimacy, as well as the variety, of these works. The Octet, his manifesto for a neo-classical way of doing things, has a needle-sharp wit, while the Concerto in D is altogether drier and more detached in its humour. The Concertino has a harmonic subtlety and rhythmic drive that's done full justice, while the String Quartet Pieces are pungent vocations of mood that only Stravinsky could have conceived. The Tango and Praeludium are pithy, jazz-inspired offcuts ideal for a miscellany such as this. The Orpheus never lets its unanimity of attack get in the way of a spontaneous response, so the Scherzo à la russe has the right swing, and the two Suites have a whimsy and Dadaist anarchy worthy of Erik Satie. The recording has all the necessary clarity and definition. There are now several such Stravinsky collections available, but you won't go wrong with the Orpheus's offering. I think this recording will be one of my Stravinskij favorites. It combines the tendencies of all his periods in an ultimate listenable format. You can listen to this anytime, it is daring but not very demanding, nor to your brain or your ears. Some of the tracks are really "odd ditties" and fun to listen to. Not much of the "Rite of Spring" dramatics, or the complexities of the other ballets; the music is playful and rythmic, but very modernistic. I think the choice of music is suberb, I recommend this to anyone interested in experimental music -- may it be Art Ensemble of Chicago or King Crimson, seriously you may like this.
