Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Billy Childish, while something of a modern-day renaissance man (he writes and paints in addition to his music) will most likely be remembered for his recasting of garage rock, blues and R&B as a post-punk form. While this is certainly an intuitive endeavour, Childish has handled it with aplomb, delivering music that can include raw emotion, political pith, sardonic observation or just plain ol' invigorating garage stomp and howl. Childish is also obsessively prolific, with more than 100 albums and countless singles delivered at a breakneck pace. Elementary Headcoats serves as this project's swansong, as Childish disbanded the group in early 2000. Ironically, it's a wonderfully cohesive introduction to Childish's best band, Thee Headcoats. Selecting the songs from the band's huge output of rare and hard-to-find singles, Childish includes a nice mix of Headcoats material--from the funny "Headcoats On" and "The Earls of Suave" to the savage "I've Been Fu*king Your Daughters & Pissing on Your Lawns". Childish is a rare, uncompromising talent (who also happens to be extremely entertaining) and Elementary Headcoats is a more than worthy introduction. --S Duda

CD Description

Influential British garage-punks Thee Headcoats were a fructiferous crew, as this 50-track singles compilation will attest. Culled from 45s released between 1990 and 1999, it includes rarities and never-released tracks that will please followers. The breadth and dazzling depth will also entice new fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHY I AM I THE FIRST REVIEWER?, 24 Jun 2005
By Tone Death Stephens (Huntingdon, England) - See all my reviews
Why has nobody left a signpost here to steer people in the right direction. The Childish direction. Surely someone bought this. Anyone who has must love it. This is a compilation of the singles by thee best garage-punk band ever (or maybe that honour belongs to the Gories), mainly because they are extremely garagey AND extremely punky, which is the way garage-punk should be, surely. If your idea of garage rock is informed by the NME, then you probably thought that the Vines/Datsuns/Hives/WhiteStripes thing from 2001-2003 was all garage rock. Well, you've been misled. The Hives mimic garage rock, but when you get in to real stuff you realise what a weak band they were. The White Stripes are influenced by garage rock, but are not a garage rock band as they do other things too. The Vines were in no way whatsover garage rock. A couple of decent singles and albums of dull ballads.
Anyhoo, this is what you want. Some of the songs are extremely lo-fi, but this a good thing you'll grow to appreciate. Most of the songs are crystal clear anyway. And most of the songs are hilarious, scroll up and look at the tracklist up there.Buy it, and if you like it (which you should if you like rock'n'roll and have a sense of humour) check out everything else by Billy Childish, along with the aforementioned Gories, plus the Mummies, 5678's, Cramps and the Back From The Grave series for the original punk sounds of the sixties.

By the way, after hearing this you'll be wondering why on earth 90's folk were digging 'britpop' and the Spice Girls.
